high-pitched noise while on battery on thinkpad T61

so yeah.. I have a pretty annoying high-pitched noise while the laptop is running on battery power on my thinkpad t61. I've done a bit of initial googling and the only solution I've come across is to change the max_cstate of the processor to a higher level, which gets rid of the problem but also destroys your battery life. Anyone else aware of other solutions?
