Alsa: I want "Volume Control" to control PCM instead of Master

As in the subject, I would like the volume control to modify the PCM volume instead of Master.
My multimedia keys work the same, so at the moment I have to manually change PCM from the audio preferences.

You just want to change PCM values by keybord keys or from within some program? I am running moc, and this can switch between master and PCM.

But in generell have a look into you keyboard config. Your sound buttons are often bound to kind like "volume +1/-1". Maybe you can fix it with xmodmap. Using amixer you can modfiy your PCM values. Try man amixer.

Re: Alsa: I want "Volume Control" to control PCM instead of Master

Well, I suppose I was kind of tight on information... smile
For volume control I mean either the volume control applet, either the multimedia keys.
Now, both of them control the Master Channel of the mixer, while the only one that changes something in the volume is the PCM channel.
I looked in amixer, and I see my configuration.
In AlsaMixer I can happily control the volume (still from PCM).
What I would like to know is where my keyboard is configured to change the "Master" channel in the alsamixer, so that I can change it to the PCM (or at least have the Volume Control Applet to do that.
It might be worth to note that I am using a dell d630 on a dock, and the sound card should be the digital one in the dock rather than the one in the laptop.
Usually in ubuntu I had to mess with the sound manager to obtain a volume control on the keys.

P.S.:  you guys are FAST! Thanks for the help!

you can try using "keytouch" to modify your media keys.

I will try to associate it with KeyTouch.
Now my problem is to find the command that raises directly the PCM instead of the master, but that's another story.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Alsa: I want "Volume Control" to control PCM instead of Master

I have some key combinations set up for volume up, volume down and mute in my Openbox setup; but had struggled with the volume control applet in Lxpanel in the same way: I needed it to control one particular mixer channel instead of the (presumable default) "Master". Just today I found and installed gvolwheel from AUR and it works well enough, in that I can switch between the "Master" and "PCM" channels.

You made my day smile

My problem was with the fact that when I put the laptop in a dock it changes audio output, for some strange reason. With Ubuntu, it used a "Digital" output and every time I plugged it in I had to fiddle with the settings.
This gvolwheel is perfect, I just need to change between PCM and Master.
Thanks.

It seems you solved it, but take a look here if (as it seems) you are using gnome. That's how i solved that in the day.
