@schneida Building gnome for yourself is definitely a non-trivial proposition. I've thought about doing it myself in the past, especially for Slackware where they don't provide their own gnome (Pat Volkerding's a KDE guy) and where the addon gnomes like dropline always seem to be out of date. But I've walked away shaking my head each time trying to sort through the morass of dependencies and alternatives.

@gun26: Well, the good thing about Linux are alternatives. XFCE4 worked quite good the last time I tried it and maybe I'll find some time to try KDE4 once more then. We'll see. Thanks for the warning though!

@wonder
Hi fellow! Sorry, I didn't blame your packages! Actually, you are doing an amazing job with them!!
I just didn't know if you have packaged all gnome3 apps.
For example, gnome3 doesn't have a GUI tool to change the theme yet, I didn't know if it has but it wasn't package yet.
So, since you said ArchLinux packages has all gnome3 functionalities, I believe in you
Anyway, thanks for the packages of gnome3!

@Ronis_BR the gnome-appearance was dropped and they don't have any theme changer by default in gnome-control-center now. But somebody did a tool to help customization and it has theme support.
pacman -S gnome-tweak-tool

I installed the latest gnome-unstable on my desktop ( ATI hd5xxx series ), and I can run gdm/startx and boot gnome with no errors.. The problem is that no panels are loading and fallback mode isn't activating. Other environments work, like xorg-twm, and I can get fallback mode going if I disable composite in xorg.conf. Anyone have any ideas? This is a fresh install.
EDIT: Using fglrx (from the catalyst package) drivers which are installed properly.

@zvxy most causes are because you don't have enabled gnome-unstable in the right way or you had used in the past gnome-shell from aur and you have mixed dependencies. also, provide ~/.xsession-errors log

It is a fresh install, using pacman -S gnome --ignore gnome-themes, also .xsession-errors was not generated.

@zvxy do you have libwnck?

@zvxy, do you have gnome-shell installed? As an experiment, try uninstalling gnome-shell and see if you can now start gnome 3, which will land you in fallback (similar looking to gnome 2 with simplified panels which are wider than gnome 2). If that works, stay in gnome and open a terminal, re-install gnome shell and try starting it in the terminal with gnome-shell --replace to see if you get an informative message.

I just installed libwnck, and its working now. However now the top panel is pure white. I didn't have libwnck for some reason even though I installed everything as followed from guides etc (right after a netinstall)
@gun26, I was able to already get into fallback mode by disabling some extensions in my xorg.conf, so it would be forced to go into fallback.

@zvxy i fixed the missing dependency by pushing a new metacity into extra.
what video driver do you use?

So, if I have had in gnome 2 some personal icons (homemade software), they'll get integrated when going to gnome3 ?
Offline
@nTia89 depends if you use fallback mode. in fallback mode your session is not authorized because they removed the autostart file from polkit-gnome and they didn't replace it with anything. This bug is still discussed between devs and they didn't reach to any solution, mostly they flame each other and i'm waiting to see their solution to know how to act.
as a solution, just copy the one from gdm:
cp /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop /etc/xdg/autostart/
@jolinfire yes.

i'm here ! from gmone3 !
....after some tricks to get a working machine
imho/personal care: the first thing that comes out in eyes is that gnome3/gtk3 finally reach a visual beauty like kde4 and qt4
in the other side i get dramatically worsening of performance. i'm on a dual core with nvidia 9800gt and is slow......
i haven't seen bugs (but i've just installed it) except for one thing:
i came from gnome2 and following archwiki i updated my packages ..... BUT running only that command i get a non working system, only installing manually the entire group i get gnome3 working..... i this is missing some dependencies because before in gnome2 i don't have every package installed that were in the gnome group (for example i have uninstalled epiphany and evolution because i don't use their)
said this, i hope gnome3 grow again to reach gnome2 performance

Hello fellas, I've installed Gnome 3 some days ago on a VirtualBox virtual machine and everything went fine. Today I was reading the Wiki and it said that the [gnome-unstable] repository is built on top of [testing] and I should enable it. Fair enough, I enabled [testing], updated the system and rebooted. Okay, X didn't work, I had to rebuild the Virtual Box guest additions to work with the 2.6.38 kernel in [testing]. I rebuilt them with the package virtualbox-guest-additions provided by Arch repositories, rebooted, and... It doesn't work either. The funny thing is that with [testing] disabled Gnome 3 worked. Somehow. Have I done anything wrong in the steps I described above?

I believe you are using fglrx, it seems the driver doesn't work well with the xorg which is in testing. I've had the same problem. I don't have testing enabled and it works all fine for me.

No, I've got a nvidia graphics card, so, no fglrx module is loaded, but anyway, yeah, I'll be using [core]. I read somewhere that it can't be virtualised because VirtualBox doesn't support gnome-shell (yet). What a shame. :\

@wonder : thanks.
Too bad that - for now - firefox is busted with gcc 4.6
