Did you restart your computer (not only X, you need to restart the whole thing)?
Which driver is causing problems (which one are you using), nvidia, nvidia-173xx or nvidia-96xx?

I got the same thing this morning. Rolling back to the 260.19.44 version worked. I'm not sure why the new driver didn't work for me.

Downgrading did the trick, but we need a more permanent solution.....

Your solution lies with nvidia. As its a binary blob, I'm not sure what you expect downstream distributors to do. And given the lack of any detailed information in this thread, I can only point you here:
