H264 1080p with VAAPI on Intel Arrandale Graphics broken?

since some update it seems that the vaapi-accelerated decoding of 1080p isn't working right. I'm pretty sure it was working at one time but right now it is stuttering like crazy (like one picture every 3 seconds) despite cpu-usage is somwhere between 10 and 20 percent. The problem exists with both mplayer-vaapi and vlc, so I think its an issue with the video driver/drm stuff. Does someone have this working? I tried downgrading mplayer-vaapi and the intel-driver but without success so far. If someone has an idea what to check or try to get it working I would really appreciate it.

Some more Info:

CPU is i3-380UM with integrated Arrandale Graphics (Intel HD)
libdrm/xf86-video-intel/libdrm/libva/mplayer-vaapi is newest from the repos (extras/community)
720p video is working fine with minimal CPU-usage
mplayer says that it is using vaapi for 720p and 1080p

Works here on a Core i3 550 with VLC. The videos I tried were not perfectly fluid, but it was more like 24 fps than 0.333 fps . Both cores at about 25% load.

I haven't installed the latest libva yet (I'm using 1.0.8.) Also no (Xfce) compositor because that disables vsync.

@seiichiro0185 update to testing and check vlc again. ffmpeg from testing has support for the newer libva. mplayer-vaapi was only rebuilt and if is not working, let me know

Thanks for the responses. It seems the new versions just hit extras/community, so i did update ffmpeg/x264/vlc/mplayer-vaapi. VLC now plays 1080p almost smooth, but in mplayer the problem is still there.

The versions I have installed now are the following:

mplayer-vaapi 33025-3
vlc 1.1.8-2
ffmpeg 20110330-1
x264 20110327-1
libva 1.0.11-1

Im having a similar problem, every 1080p video downloaded from Youtube wont play smoothly on mplayer or VLC, but 720p has no problems at all. Ive updated everything few minutes ago and still not working.
I really hope someone finds a fix for this, I allways download videos from Youtube and watch with mplayer than use Flash player that makes my Atom choke to death

I tried a 1080p video and noticed no playback issues on a Radeon HD 4200 IGP.

I pushed mplayer-vaapi 33161-1 to [community] which is built using the latest ffmpeg; see if this works better.

Thanks for the fast reaction. Unfortunately the new version still shows the same problem.

Is there some way to better debug this problem, like verbose mode for vaapi or something like this? Right now there is no meaningfull output from mplayer other than it saying "you system is to slow".

I also already tried various compinations of cache and other parameters and removed my mplayer config to make sure it isn't a configuration error on my part. But regardless of any parameters the problem stays the same. Maybe someone who has it working right could post his mplayer config/command line used to play 1080p?

Yes, same here, that upgrade didnt seem to help
And I guess I just learned that VAAPI aint even supported on my Intel Atom based system I think (VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation N10 Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)), so I guess Ive been using mplayer-vaapi with basic XV output mode. But I can remember earlier playing 1080p videos without any problems, so something changed in near future, but what.

@ByteTemplar: yeah, on Intel Graphics VAAPI only is supported on Core iX chips with integrated GPU for H264. So no luck on Atom Based systems (unless you have Atom with Nvidia ION Graphics, but then you should be using VDPAU, not VAAPI)

Short update regarding the new libva 1.0.12: vlc now runs perfectly smooth with about 25% CPU, but mplayer is still stuttering like hell.
