Firefox 4 Flash Issues [SOLVED]

After updating my Firefox from 3.6 to 4.0 yesterday my flash started having issues in some cases. Youtube videos play just fine, but selection titles (for a lack of a better way to describe it) on sites such as NHL.com and Hulu.com aren't displaying properly for me (they display, but when you highlight over them the frame goes gray and revers back to its original state after a couple of seconds. My terminal shows these errors when on a website with the flash errors:

*** NSPlugin Viewer  *** WARNING: unhandled variable 18 (<unknown variable>) in NPN_GetValue()

I searched this error but only came up with solutions for old flash problems (for both Firefox and Chromium), I tried some that I thought might work but to no avail. To this point I have reinstalled firefox4, nspluginwrapper, and flash-plugin and saw no change. It should also be noted that the same websites display perfectly fine in Chromium so I am assuming this is a firefox issue. Apologies if this is posted in the incorrect section, I am very new and still learning Arch. If you need any additionally screenshots, logs, etc I will be happy to provide.

Re: Firefox 4 Flash Issues [SOLVED]

I have an update. I have been doing a little bit of looking, and while the flash loads properly on Chromium, it still displays the same error in the terminal, that being
*** NSPlugin Viewer  *** WARNING: unhandled variable 18 (<unknown variable>) in NPN_GetValue()

That being the case, I am at a total loss as to how to get it working or what to even be looking for.

Re: Firefox 4 Flash Issues [SOLVED]

If you want, you can get the prerelease flash plugin from the AUR which is working fine for me with Firefox4.

I have no idea what your error messages mean.

Re: Firefox 4 Flash Issues [SOLVED]

I have been messing around with some settings and my most recent change was to remove my mozilla profile settings by mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.bak and then restarted firefox and am getting a new error:

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so [/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32]

To me, it looks like Mozilla is trying to load the 64 bit rather than the 32 bit flashplugin as it is going for /usr/lib/ rather than /usr/lib32/

Right now I'm at a total loss for which file to edit to correct this problem, going to the google. Hoping that this will fix my problem. I'm guessing when Firefox 4 did the update it changed that setting.

Re: Firefox 4 Flash Issues [SOLVED]

I'm experiencing the same problem as you, Evanhuang, youtube vids work perfect but things like nrj.com webradio and such flicker just as you described above.
I installed the flashplugin from the multilib repo, reinstalled and restarted firefox but didn't change anything.

Any hint on how to fix this issue is appreciated!

I haven't had any progress yet. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox and dependencies, and that dosen't seem to be the issue. I've been talking to friends and they aren't having similar issues though, so it must be some other factor playing on it.

Re: Firefox 4 Flash Issues [SOLVED]

Just adding my 0.02€ here by confirming everything here. Flash is a _mess_ on firefox 4 right now (and the bin32-flashplugin-beta
doesn't help either).

I am happy if a flash instance does NOT crash before actually loading and even happier if I can watch a video without at least one
crash as it's playing. Also the weird rectangles going black where they should update the rendered image.

Chromium has none of these issues.

EDIT: I was able to fix the crashing part by disabling hardware acceleration: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 34#p899434

Re: Firefox 4 Flash Issues [SOLVED]

I had the same issue, but I resolved it by installing the flashplugin pre-release package in the archlinuxfr repo, which is 64bit. So I guess that will work fine for me for now and hopefully I won't have anymore problems.

This worked for me! It started causing some issues with my Chromium (it would freeze up and crash), but my original intention was to make it so that I could use firefox again, and in that sense it was a success. Thanks for the helpful tip!

@proton252 This is the 64bit square release. Please double check what package you wanted to flag as out of date.

Anyone knows why I get this with packer?

packer -S flashplugin-prerelease
error: failed to prepare transaction (package architecture is not valid)
:: package flashplugin-prerelease-10.3.180.65-1-i686 does not have a valid architecture

With makepkg it works...

@Phlogiston: this AUR package is x86_64 only. so packer seems to give your correct error information. This package may be more relevant (or the one linked in the first comment at the time of writing): http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=47038

Comment by: anish on Thu, 14 Apr 2011 17:07:48 +0000
actually, Phlogiston, you want this package http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=47230 10.3.180.65 is the beta, not the prerelease.

@rebenvb I'm getting the same error as Phogiston and I AM on an x86_64 system.

Have you tried installing the prerelease from the archlinuxfr repo? That's how it worked for me, without any further issues.

Have you tried just manually downloading andbuilding it from AUR?  It looks like yaourt is doing something weird, but I don't use yaourt, so I wouldn't be able to help you with it.  I'm using the flashplugin-prerelease from AUR and am not having any problems with it at all.

You'll need a aur helper program such as yaourt, packer etc.

Take a look here for help with AUR.

Re: Firefox 4 Flash Issues [SOLVED]

I download "Tarball" and "PKGBUILD " of "flashplugin-prerelease 10.3.162.29-2" and I then extracted "flashplugin-prerelease.tar.gz" then with current user entered "makepak -s ":

[tux@myhost flashplugin-aur]$ makepak -s

basename: invalid option -- 's'

Making symbolic link creation script:

Removing symbolic links:

Package creation complete.

again done with root user:

[root@myhost flashplugin-aur]# makepkg --asroot -s
==> ERROR: flashplugin-prerelease is not available for the 'i686' architecture.
Note that many packages may need a line added to their PKGBUILD
    such as arch=('i686').

the top message mean this package not available for i686 architecture? no way?

I think you should create a new thread for your issue. If you are indeed unable to download flash from adobe, then we can upload it for you somewhere else, if needed, and if it isn't against the forum rules.

Uhmmm... it is against forum rules to violate license terms and conditions, and that's what you would be doing if you made flash available from any source other than adobe's official one.

If you're being blocked by the government control of the people of Iran, this isn't where to go for advice. Arch, as a rule, is not involved in political stuff. As tomk pointed out before, the solutions that were pointed out in this thread before are not appropriate here.
