Hi!
I'm just starting to get used to blender... and it feels like I'm missing something. Getting good results from rendering seems awfully hard & takes ages. Much of that might be my lack of experience with blender - using the wrong combinations of settings to get a decent quality / rendering time ratio... but I don't think that's the whole of it. ATM, it takes me about the same time to "sketch" a scene as it did with C4D (sometimes I'm even already a bit faster with blender, thanks to its "awful" user interface). But finetuning materials, lighting etc takes me about four times as long using Blender. Then I end up with about 40 times the rendering time it took C4D to do "the same" - and the resulting images still look a lot worse.
Long story short:
What's does your Blender "recommended setup" look like?
External render engine (which one?)? Should I be using scripts? Download a material library or lighting presets or something somewhere? Google found me a lot of "hints", but everything I read during the last 2 hours seems to be obsolete or not applicable to the bleder build available for (arch)linux (/x86_64), so...
Thanks!

Hi,
There has been quite a lot of improvement in last-not least 2.56beta version, rendertimes are around 30% faster, and gui seems more reasonable. Personally I do like the internal renderer, but I also feel it slower than others.
Check here for render-benchmark times, http://www.eofw.org/bench/
in the AUR are some specific blender pkgs (blender-svn and blender-beta) wich might get you better results and config.
Running a QuadCore 6600, took 14 sec to render the test.blend, and 26 in a DualCore one, those were my benchmarks.
I 'm used to Lightwave (last 10 years) and was quite a problematic time shifting to blender, but things are getting better.
LuxRender is a nice unbiased render engine, results are impressive, but is like being in a time machine .... time runs slow
hope this helps

I'm no Blender pro but whenever I mess around with it I tend to "steal" the materials/ textures/ settings from tutorials.
I think there are material packs online tho.
These ones seem pretty:
