S/PDIF passthrough kills all other sound

As topic says, the moment I use passthrough audio in XBMC or similar applications, all other sound stops working in all other applications. The sound does not start working again after I stop using passthrough. Is there any way to fix this? Any help much appreciated!

Edit: Using Pulseaudio over ALSA, with an integrated Realtek 7.1 soundcard.

Try:

iecset audio on

This should set it back to audio mode.
