How to uninstall Gnome 3

I installed Gnome 3 for try yesterday, but I found it is not stable at all. The main problem is kdm process eating up CPU usage cause system damn slow. Now I want to remove it and<b> install KDE<b> instead of Gnome 2.x but I want <b>GTK software</b> support. Please could anyone tell me how to do that? Thanks in advance.

Re: How to uninstall Gnome 3

So you don't want GNOME 3, but you do want KDE and GTK? You can just remove gnome-shell and install KDE:

# pacman -Rcns gnome-shell
# pacman -S kde gtk2

I don't want to be rude but why ask such question while the answer is just 5 minutes searching away?

First of all, I am not the guru of Archlinux.

secondly, the forums search function sucks ,I often DON'T get what I want from the search function.

Besides,I have important files in my archlinux,I don't want to reinstall archlinux due to problem during uninstall gnome 3 ,so I need to get confirmed answered just in case.

Ever heard of google? You should try it. You should also try actually looking for answers rather than hiding behind the excuse of 'not being a guru of Archlinux', the majority of users aren't.

Of course! big_smile

You're right, the forum search function is lacking. I always like to search the forums using:

site:bbs.archlinux.org How to blah blah blah

on Google.

1, At least you got your archlinux running so your skill must be sufficient.
2, It's not necessary to search in the forum, google also works and don't forget the wiki.
3, If so, You should stress the point that you don't want to lose your important data or no one will understand (as I am).
Well, that's I have to say, thanks for your explanation.

PS: Good luck with KDE, hopefully you won't be disappointed.

1. I don't think it is hard to  get archlinux running by following the tutorial step by step, sometimes I even think it is easier than Ubuntu.
2.I did search on Google and forum but without luck before I created this post .You can try search "archlinux uninstall gnome 3" or "archlinux remove gnome 3 " ... you will get nothing correct answer about that ...
3, Yes,Maybe I should stress that

Re: How to uninstall Gnome 3

removing gnome is like removing any other package or a group of packages.

there is nothing special, just pacman -Rsc gnome gnome-extra and then you may want to run pacman -Rs $(pacman -Qdtq) too to remove orphaned packages from gnome 2

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

It's never a good idea to experiment with a system that carries important files. Maybe you should consider using a second machine or a VM for testing, together with a good backup of your data.

It's ironic that when searching Google for

uninstall gnome 3 site:bbs.archlinux.org

Wicked!!! Thanks, brad - I've always googled "SUBJECT Arch" which did the trick and is not as cumbersome as writing the entire string. Which leads onto the next question: I'm sure you don't type it in but have some shortcut or other - if so, how do you set it up?

Not on the main page as far as I can see so obviously you know more than me.

Whatever, I don't want to hijack the thread or draw more vague responses, so over and out.

EDIT:

Found it, but the question remains. Just looking at google custom search instead...

That's exactly why telling people to google is counter productive.

Noone typically asks people to google the forums. And asking questions BEFORE doing a search is the very definition of counter productive, long run. Help vampirism drains a community.
