When I start cairo-compmgr with Software Rendering, I face issue of clikable items not being highlighted when I hover mouse over them.
Also, I have the issue of first item being selected automatically when I right click on certain apps.
Is there anything I can do about it?

I *think* it may have something to do with Cairo-compmgr and PCManfFM, when PCManFM is managing the desktop, not playing nicely together. If you right-click and leave the right mouse button depressed for just a moment the right click menu will appear. It seems as though, all of a sudden, depressing the right mouse button is interpreted somehow as a click and releasing the button as another click; thereby activating the right click menu item that would have been selected.

Well, I dont have pcmanfm installed. But, you are right. If I the right click pressed & move mouse a bit, I can select any option from the menu.

Then the plot thickens! This must be an upstream bug? Googling doesn't return much except for a few unresolved forum threads much like this one... I had even tried using Cairo-compmgr-git and the behaviour persisted.

The above issue which I mentioned are observed on my desktop PC which has intel GMA x3100.
While I dont observe any issues with cairo-compmgr with my Samsung N210 netbook (Intel Atom processor).
I guess both use the same video driver. So, what is the issue actually dependent upon?

Nouveau? (EDIT: Just re-read thread title: Obviously not Nouveau!) That's what I am using over here. I thought there might be some quirk in an xorg.conf or something, but 1) I am pretty sure that running Nouveau neither generates nor requires one, and 2) I cannot see Cairo-compmgr altering or creating an xorg.conf.

I've been only using X rendering all along: When I use software rendering, everything remains the same expect that is slows down by orders of magnitude! :^)

hmmm... try disabling some plugins
I'm only using shadows and menu transparency/animation
if doesn't work try xcompmgr (this without shadows, just "xcompmgr &")
or don't use composite, all will be faster
Hope to be helpfull

I have read suggestions to disable this plugin or that; with many attesting that disabling $SOME_PLUGIN works. Nothing, sadly, works. I do, at present, use xcompmgr-dana but had become enamored with some of Cairo-compmgr's niceties.

well don't become sad
you still alive
however I'm considering droping the graphical interface for a faster boot.
Hope to be helpfull

Elementary gtk theme. Maybe is a problem with the engine that the theme uses, try with diferent themes and engines

I have tried changing themes a few times today, to no avail. I did, however, begin disabling plugins and found that the window opacity one, when disabled, did away with my right-clicking issues.

I like compositing, but i like much more the speed of openbox without it, maybe when cairo-compmgr gets more stable i'll try it again
Take care
