All works fine, except for the first login fter a freshboot/reboot of the system... the second login seems to be fine.
When i login it gives me an empty screen and my conky scripts shows aswell, but it takes the computer 10 to 20 seconds to load the Desktop... if i then logout and log back in it loads in 1 to 3 seconds flat.
I found 2 previous posts around this subject:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=98901
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=107122
but none of the options mentioned in the links help to fix my problem, and i think i might have a diffirent problem.
- I removed the modules and services from rc.conf one by one with a reboot each time.
- I disabled all startup applications.
- I Tried starting gnome with startx from the cli (booted init3).
- I tried disabling the FGLRX driver and removing its modules and services from rc.conf.
- I disabled CPUFREQ alowing my computer to boot and login at 100% cpu power.
- I checked my bios for a mention of a floppy drive, there wasn't any.
- Disabled the floppy module with !floppy
- I even tried removing the gnome program that is suppost to crash during login as decribed in in the above url.
- Checked if the hostname was set correctly as some Arch community members tell
me it might be a DNS issue.
Nothing works, the login remains slow as hell the first time after a powerdown or powercycle.
Does anyone have any suggestions ? should i file a bug report about this ?
edit:
I tried using the slim login mananger instead of GDM but it made no diffirence.
edit:
I tried bootchart but it doesn't make me any the wiser as to what is going on during the login process, i removed it again.
edit
i created a bug report about this issue.

There's some apps which aren't in auto-start but auto-start anyway. Nautilus, of course. Gnome-panel, gnome-settings-daemon, gnome-power etc.
Gnome is just pretty big, high startup times are to be expected. I cut about a minute of boot-to-usable by switching to awesome, simply by not having to start the above.

I have been looking in to openbox + pypanel & trayer solution, it's in the works if gnome3 turns out to be no good.
However i really like gnome for it's clean look and rich feature set.
As for the login it should be about 4 secs from login to desktop... always.
I would really like to find a solution to the issue presented above.

FWIW, after a system update 3-4 days ago, I have started experiencing the same problem with delayed login. If Gnome 3 doesn't work out, I'm bailing as well!

Humm, i started having a similar problem just now, but just after installing gnome3!
GDM takes a few seconds to load (15/20 secs) and sometimes it doesn't find my username, i have to enter it as well as the password.
If I boot in runlevel 3 the first login also takes a very long time. What could be the problem?

That may help, it helped me to boost KDE login on my netbook.

But this is not the problem. Everything is loaded, the disk isn't being accessed, neither is the cpu, if the leds are correctly wired.
Like I said, even when booting console only, I type the username, then the password, it immediately tells me the last login time, but then takes more than just a few seconds to show me the prompt.
EDIT: found the cause, more or less!
