best supported linux mouse?

I am sick of bad supported hardware, and think I could effort a new mouse, with a mass of buttons, wheels and things that relly do work well using linux.

Every advice is welcome.

Re: best supported linux mouse?

Using Logitec Optical Mouse (M/N: M-BD58 -- purchased in 2004).  Works perfectly with Arch.  The scroll-wheel is a must for me, since I got used to its convenience.

All Microsoft mouse products have worked for me, in the past.  Can't speak for the latest and greatest.

In fact, it seems like a long, long time since I've installed a Linux distro and found the scroll-wheel didn't work, or the mouse cursor slammed into the corner of the display -- auto-clicking away, openning up dozens of windows before I can kill X  roll

My laptop... That's a different story.  The touchpad works, sort of.  I wish it would click-and-drag properly -- so I don't have to hold down the right mouse button.  (With FC2 it worked perfectly, so I'm guessing I'm missing a crucial Arch package that I've been too lazy to hunt down.)

What mouse is giving you grief?

Yep, I use Logitech mice, too - the MX310 has been working well under Linux.

I love MS mice (*ducks*)
The MS wireless laptop mouse is awesome... a single AA battery has lasted about 2 months

Maybe MS should think of going into the peripheral hardware business.

Re: best supported linux mouse?

I'm using a Logitech wireless desktop w/ optical mouse. This is the first one Logitech made that was optical and had the thumb button. If I want to use the thumb button I'll have to patch and install evdev support for X and I really don't feel like doing it. Otherwise, it's a great setup.

Re: best supported linux mouse?

I use a logitech MX500 and an MS intellimouse explorer 3.0.

The 3.0 works best, with all buttons working as per the guide in the wiki (including wheel).

I don't know about the MX500, because it's on a computer I rarely do anything with.

Re: best supported linux mouse?

I'm using a $9 Mitsumi optical mouse. It works great, although the other one we have's scroller (it doesn't use a wheel, it has a knob that you push up and down) somehow got smashed when I left one weekend on a camping trip.

Re: best supported linux mouse?

MS mice work good, just about any mouse will work fine.

I have a mutated MS intellimouse V1.1, and it works awesomely. I call it mutated because the colouring is all different and im yet to see another MS V1.1 with the same colouring. Heck its product code doesnt register on google even though the normal one registers pages and pages of hits.

But it works good and i wouldnt use any other.

Re: best supported linux mouse?

I too have a Logitech MX500 optical mouse, and was able to sucessfully get all the buttons working (9-button mouse) without having to use the popular imwheel approach, but with evdev as the protocol in my xorg.conf

Re: best supported linux mouse?

I've got a cheapo 5 button mouse. The middle button is also a scroll wheel. In firefox buttons 4 and 5 work as back page and forward page but in konqueror they scroll a page horizontally left/right if there is a horizontal scroll bar.

Here is how I set it up in xorg.cong:

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Mouse1"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
    Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
    Option "Buttons" "7"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"
    Option "Resolution" "800"
EndSection

then I need

/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5"

which I slung in /etc/profile.

You know, a mild cleanning solution, applied once in a while, might return it back to its original color  tongue

Re: best supported linux mouse?

If it helps, my solution was very similar to Vacants...this is what I did:
· Edited my xinitrc file and added this line to fix the button order:

/usr/bin/X11/xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5"

· Opened my xorg.conf file and edited the mouse input device section to this:

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Configured Mouse"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "CorePointer"
    Option "Protocol" "evdev"
Option "Dev Name" "PS2++ Logitech MX Mouse"
    Option "Dev Phys" "isa0060/serio1/input0"
    Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
    Option "Buttons" "7"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
    Option "Resolution" "800"
EndSection

To get the information for "Dev Name" and "Dev Phys", I just cut and paste the info from the running "cat /proc/bus/input/devices". · Restarted X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and that's it...

Re: best supported linux mouse?

Afaik communities x.org does not include evdev support, does it? I used to patch xorg, found out that would bring me evdev, but my 9 buttoned extra wheel whippled ms intelli explorer still was confused about it's fancy knobs, so I stopped that. My logitech trackman marble fx (first generation, ps2) still made no use of the red button, whatever hints and howto's I read, analised and followed.

Re: best supported linux mouse?

I have a *gasp* microsoft laser wheel mouse (USB) and it works great. Microsoft should just turn into a giant mouse making company and forget about this "windows" thing. Most of their mice seem pretty decent. Of course, I always gravitate towards the simpler models (no gajillion button models for me).

the side scrolling ones are cool... however, I don't like the smooth wheel movement... I need a wheel that has the little clicky points...

I also find MS mice to be more ergonomic compared to logitech...

Re: best supported linux mouse?

Interesting about the MS mice working for people... I had an optical standard 3 button wheel mouse from MS and it had a habit of jumping across the screen every once in a while.

Re: best supported linux mouse?

When it comes to mice/keyboards, Logitech wins all.

They're a liitle costly it may seem but the prices are definitely worth it.  big_smile

I had a mouse where the scroll wheel was too stiff - there was a metal bar inside that could be bent to adjust the strength of the "clickyness".
