Mutt or Gnus (part of Emacs)
If you desperately need a GUI the only sane option is Claws-Mail.


There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

I'm a long time Thunderbird user, and I've always been pretty happy with it. It can use up a lot of memory, but since I restrict myself to checking email once a day, I don't leave it running all the time. I might check out claws-mail though after glancing through this thread (just to see what the fuss is about).
