I normally wouldn't post here, but even this is baffling me and I can't find much from anyone else (via google etc) on this.
when I log into gnome-session (I normally use slim, but using GDM also does this), all I get is a black screen with a cursor. If I move my mouse around the top where presumably the top bar would be it flashes white where artifacts are.
I can use Enlightenment/Flux/xfce just fine. I was using gnome 2 without issues.
nVidia proprietary drivers (270.30) - GTX 560 TI
Could it be the proprietary drivers? i would prefer not to use nouveau at all, given 3d support is lacking. I'm going to play with the drivers now.
I have also tried running it as a freshly created user -- no dice
Thanks a lot.

Same problem here, same drivers with GTX 460 - 768mb.

anything useful in ~/.xsession-errors?
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Will test later, don't have the time right now because of school. I did a quick install on my laptop with intel GMA and it works perfectly, so doesn't seem to be something I do systematically wrong.

Created a new account, but nothing in ~/.xsession-errors.
Starting GDM takes long (waiting for some timeout?) and the theme is already looking very basic in GDM. After starting a gnome-session the "gnome-shell" process hangs at 100% CPU utilization.
In XFCE in the GTK3 programs such as evince 3.0.0 the theme is also crappy, very basic.
Any news?
