[SOLVED] Any way to run Gnome 3 but with an older Xorg/Intel driver?

Gnome works nicely on my machine (945GM intel video card). However since I upgraded to xorg found in Testing I can no longer switch to external display only. I can have (weird) mirror screen configuration (my external monitor doesn't have same aspect ratio) but if I disable the laptop monitor then I get a blank screen on the external monitor and then need to kill the X session. I tried with the hardware keys and xrandr using a known working configuration.

Is there a way to revert back to Xorg found in Core while keeping Gnome 3?

Thanks
Alphazo

[EDIT]
For sanity check I booted my machine with kernel 2.6.39rc3 and now I can use my external display and disable the laptop one. When I upgraded to Gnome3 I blacklisted 2.6.38 that was in Testing. Looking at my upgrade logs shows that problem started to occur with the move of 2.6.38 to Core.
