Xfce4 and reboot/shutdown problem with xorg-server 1.10

Hi there,
I'm using Xfce4. But this CK thing drives me crazy,

Problem 1: Mounting- SOLVED - Gamin or FAM is neede for automount to work
Thunar is automatically mounting USB drives ONLY when I have thunar-vfs and hal installed. In any other situations it gives "cannot create mount point" error.
~/.xsession-errors

thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type.
thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type.
thunar-volman: Unknown block device type.
thunar-volman: Error creating moint point: No such file or directory.

Problem 2: Shutting down
Restart and shutdown in menu are not grayed out, however using them brings me back to login screen. This one may be related to xorg-server though.
End of xsession-errors file (just after clicking shutdown)

xfsettingsd: Fatal IO error 11 (Zasoby chwilowo niedostępne) on X server :0.
xfce4-session: Fatal IO error 104 (Połączenie zerwane przez drugą stronę) on X server :0.
xfwm4: Fatal IO error 104 (Połączenie zerwane przez drugą stronę) on X server :0.0.
xfce4-settings-helper: Fatal IO error 104 (Połączenie zerwane przez drugą stronę) on X server :0.0.
xfce4-panel: Fatal IO error 104 (Połączenie zerwane przez drugą stronę) on X server :0.0.
orage: Fatal IO error 11 (Zasoby chwilowo niedostępne) on X server :0.0.
nm-applet: Fatal IO error 11 (Zasoby chwilowo niedostępne) on X server :0.0.
polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1: Fatal IO error 11 (Zasoby chwilowo niedostępne) on X server :0.0.
checkgmail: Fatal IO error 11 (Zasoby chwilowo niedostępne) on X server :0.0.
wrapper: Fatal IO error 11 (Zasoby chwilowo niedostępne) on X server :0.0.
xfce4-mixer-plugin: Fatal IO error 11 (Zasoby chwilowo niedostępne) on X server :0.0.
xfce4-weather-plugin: Fatal IO error 11 (Zasoby chwilowo niedostępne) on X server :0.0.
xfdesktop: Fatal IO error 11 (Zasoby chwilowo niedostępne) on X server :0.0.
Thunar: Fatal IO error 104 (Połączenie zerwane przez drugą stronę) on X server :0.0.

This problem is not connected with CK.
The problem is with compatibility between xserver 1.10 and Xfdesktop.

Solutions:
For now, only downgrade.

Re: Xfce4 and reboot/shutdown problem with xorg-server 1.10

try this in .xinitrc

exec ck-launch-session startxfce4

you have it on wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfce

It is not so simple. As you can see, I've got

login_cmd exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session >~/.xsession-errors 2>&1

in my slim config - which do the same.
Also, I've tried passing it to .xinitrc with no luck hmm

I've modified both /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/org.freedesktop.udisks.pkla and /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/org.freedesktop.consolekit.pkla adding myself to files, also ck-list-sessions gives:

Session2:
    unix-user = '1000'
    realname = 'Błażej Koral'
    seat = 'Seat1'
    session-type = ''
    active = TRUE
    x11-display = ':0.0'
    x11-display-device = '/dev/tty7'
    display-device = ''
    remote-host-name = ''
    is-local = TRUE
    on-since = '2011-03-22T17:12:08.528249Z'
    login-session-id = '1'
Session1:
    unix-user = '1000'
    realname = 'Błażej Koral'
    seat = 'Seat2'
    session-type = ''
    active = FALSE
    x11-display = ':0.0'
    x11-display-device = ''
    display-device = ''
    remote-host-name = ''
    is-local = TRUE
    on-since = '2011-03-22T17:12:08.449022Z'
    login-session-id = '1'

Everything looks as it should. So why it is not working...?

Re: Xfce4 and reboot/shutdown problem with xorg-server 1.10

Could you please post the contents of /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/org.freedesktop.udisks.pkla and /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/org.freedesktop.consolekit.pkla  also?
EDIT: Sorry didn't notice you had the mounting issue fixed. If you think it's a Xorg that prevent you from shutdown could you post some logs instead?

I gave up on slim a long time ago I use GDM or XDM  thunar needs the package gvfs to automount correctly and you need to check your groups file as well and add your user name

As I stated before - I'v added my user to storage and power groups, all files are modified correctly. As for gvfs - without gamin it gives me "cannot create mount point" error (ck permissons are ok - without it gives "no permission" error).
I'm not using xfce nor linux and archlinux from yesterday. If my problem could be solved jut by following the wiki and forum guidelines, it would be solved now.

You might want to create a new thread considering you Solved the mounting problem.
The only problem left is Shutdown and Reboot with Xfce4, right?

You're right. I've change thread title - only reboot/shutdown remains unsolved.

Are you using Xorg-server 1.10 from testing? Then the xfdesktop segfault is a known issue.

That explains everything. Funny, I couldn't find a bugreport for it...

Does a rebuild of Xfdesktop solve this? If not please somebody file a bug to the Xfce tracker.

Rebuild is not enough.

Re: Xfce4 and reboot/shutdown problem with xorg-server 1.10

Clearly this isn't a proper fix & not at all elegant:-) but I have been able to get my xfce4 shutdown etc. working again by downgrading to xorg-server 1.9 & a couple of other dependencies as per the pacman wiki;

Re: Xfce4 and reboot/shutdown problem with xorg-server 1.10

Has anyone tried downgrading xfce4-session fomr -2 to -1. After this downgrade my system (i686, nouveau, no DM) shuts down cleanly, although seg. fault still exists.

EDIT: FYI:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=684188
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=361571

EDIT2: blasse, I don't think that the problem with shutdown/reboot is related to slim.

Same boat as you, except I also blamed XDM in my case. Good to know I'm not alone. I thought I was never going to pinpoint the source of the problem.

This issue (reboot/shutdown with Xfce) started happening to me after upgrading xorg-server* from 1.9.4 to 1.10.0, according to my pacman.log.

Prior to this, rebooting and shutting down from Xfce 4.8 worked without the need to modify any config/polkit files or messing around with groups. (I was only part of the "users" group; nothing more.)

Re: Xfce4 and reboot/shutdown problem with xorg-server 1.10

Don't downgrade packages. That will cause nothing but headaches.

I think the problem is the handling of permissions changed with recent upgrades, which is why ConsoleKit is required. For getting ConsoleKit to work with SLiM, look at this wiki page.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Slim#PolicyKit

Once you have this in place, your .xinitrc should only have

exec startxfce4

I'd imagine that XDM is similar.

This problem is not connected with CK.
The problem is with compatibility between xserver 1.10 and Xfdesktop.

Solutions:
For now, only downgrade.

@Leonid.I
It's not connected with Slim - I will change title to reflect this.

Re: Xfce4 and reboot/shutdown problem with xorg-server 1.10

Sorry, I read through it too quickly, since it was very similar to other people's problems with ConsoleKit recently. It turns out that I'm affected by this as well, but it's intermittent. Sometimes it will fail to shutdown, while other times it succeeds. The first time it happened I thought I just accidentally clicked on log out, since the next time it succeeded.

It probably would be best to remove the "solved" tag IMO. I suppose the root of the problem has been found, but I would consider downgrading a workaround rather than solving the problem. It won't be truly solved until a patch is submitted.

Re: Xfce4 and reboot/shutdown problem with xorg-server 1.10

I wondered why "SOLVED" was added here a day ago or so, when it actually is not solved.

Downgrading as per karenslfs's post - posted: Yesterday 14:13:41

[...@myhost ~]$ sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xf86-input-evdev-2.6.0-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xf86-video-intel-2.14.0-3-i686.pkg.tar.xz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xf86-video-vesa-2.3.0-4-i686.pkg.tar.xz
warning: downgrading package xorg-server (1.10.0.902-1 => 1.9.4.901-1)
warning: downgrading package xf86-input-evdev (2.6.0-3 => 2.6.0-2)
warning: downgrading package xf86-video-intel (2.14.903-1 => 2.14.0-3)
warning: downgrading package xf86-video-vesa (2.3.0-5 => 2.3.0-4)

solved it for me, but downgrading isn't really a solution *especially if you cleared cache*

I hope this is solved, by putting out a new version of whatever package(s) are causing the problem.

In my opinion, they should have remained in testing.

HERE IS THE BUG REPORT: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7442
