Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

Installed syslinux.

Performed again the dd for the downloaded .iso...creating a cd/dvd flash drive system (Udf).

Prepared a 2gb flash partition bootable on an eight gb flash device.

Mounted the flash drive system (Udf) and copied the contents to the iso folder I created (already has addons).

Ran the script on the data so provided and obtained an 800+mb... sh.... file.  I renamed that file to ctkarchlive-0.7-x64.iso.

I ran dd of the renamed file on the 2GB flash partition of the eightgb flash device.

I then attempted to boot as a block device and obtained a repeating error message ....syslinux.bin missing or corrupt...at the end of POST.

The flash drive is recognized in the system as a block device selectable in bios for booting.

I may have this procedure performed incorrectly except for the fact that it is recognized as a block device when completed.

Backing up from this discussion to the initial install of the iso to a flash drive.   That booted as a block device and has an empty addons directory.

If I add addons to that empty directory, the drive will not boot, hangs at end of POST.

I can only conclude that the system looks for the addons in a cd/dvd arrangement but it cannot have both addons directories in the block device case because only the Ctkhome partition can have addons.

I have not included a ctkhome partition for that reason.

It seems that I may not be able to run this iso as a block device with included addons in the iso.  I would enjoy running such a system but only as a block device for boot speed performance.

My thoughts on the subject.

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

Obviously something isn't okay, for it works perfectly for me.
Maybe your isolinux.bin file is really corrupted as suggested.

Let me recall this. Inserting add-ons into an iso before dd'ing it in a block device is pointless. Use a persistent data partition. (ctkhome)

lilsirecho wrote:

That's not true.
And makes no sense: the live system doesn't know if it's booting from a CD or another block device. It just sees his boot folder with addons/ and root-image.sqfs, and mounts the addons if any.
It works perfectly for me.

lilsirecho wrote:

Which reason????
This makes no sense to me. I don't see any reason why you would not do a ctkhome partition.
It's useless to put addons in the iso if not to put it on a CD, I repeat!

But despite what I've been repeating uselessly… and since I like doing things without much sense just to prove it's possible :

I've made and double-checked this script: http://pastebin.com/kD3ueAPt
It is "user-proof" (contrary to the previous one). It needs only to be run in a folder containing the original iso and and the add-ons you want to see inside the iso.
Anyway it will complain until it's *sure* that everything is okay to proceed.
The result is a custom iso including these add-ons.

[root@m50vn tmp]# ls
addon-noask-test.sqfs ctkarchlive-0.7-x64.iso mkiso.sh
[root@m50vn tmp]# ./mkiso.sh

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

As I stated previously, the iso has an addons folder included which is installed to the system as an empty folder named addons.  This in partition #1.  This assumes no addons were included in the install...just dd the downloaded iso.  This provides a block device response of the installed iso.

If a second partition is generated for CTKhome, a second addons folder  included which is a conflict.  Since the original  partition #1 addons  folder exists the CTKhome partition will abort due to folder addons conflict.  This seems to have occured in my attempts to boot with two partitions, partition #2 loaded with addons.  This does not boot with the downloaded iso in partition #1.  This should produce a block device boot since it does so if the downloaded iso is placed in partition #1 which is a hybrid iso.

This is my understanding of the use of the downloaded hybrid iso without applying any scipt procedure, just install it to partition1 and ctkhome to partition2.  I have tried that with no success.

Perhaps I do not understand the system provided for addons but do desire to have them part of the partition#1 install while retaining hybrid capability.

I have redownloaded the iso and performed the script procedure and received the same ...isolinux.bin...error.

I will try the latest offering and report back.

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

The ISO's addons folder doesn't conflict at all with the one in the ctkhome partition!
I've just double-checked that.

Of course, you can't have two CTKhome-labelled partitions on storages connected to the system at the same time.

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

Thank you for the confirmation about the addons.

I performed the suggested new procedure using the iso download and it produced a custom iso which does not boot giving the same isolinux.bin missing or corrupt error.

This was performed on a newly downloaded iso from a paris mirror.

I surmise that the isolinux.bin is corrupt, or empty.

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

I have kernel 2.6.38.2-1 and cannot now boot the iso I originally installed 0.7-x64 and get the isolinux.bin error.

I am afraid that some program in the recent Syu has messed with the procedures.

EDIT: When running the Custom procedure, the first element displayed:

warning...the iso is mounted read-only...

Does this prevent modifying the iso to write into it with addons?

I would think so.............

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

No, contents of the iso are copied then. It doesn't matter.

Then you were doing everything right with the previous script. That's strange…
Only explanation I can think of: maybe you're not using 4.03 64-bit version of syslinux. That could explain why it works for me and not for you!

By the way…
I still haven't understood why you don't store addons in a partition created in the remaining space of the flash memory.

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

Performed the following today...

Generated a new archlinux system from core download and added required elements to perform the install of ctk, both as the original download (hybrid) and to use for making a custom iso.

the download size is 582mb x-64 mode.

DD'ed that file into a CF flash drive partitioned with 2GB partition #1.

Report at end of DD....612MB copied ????????

Attempt to boot resulted in the same isolinuix-bin error.

Is 612MB a valid value?

Syslinux install is version 4.03-4......

Perhaps DD doesn't do the job correctly for my CF card, however, when I first downloaded and installed 0.7 it booted!

It does not do so now.

I have tried several CF cards to no avail.

Th contents of the CF card:....

file:///mnt/md/README
file:///mnt/md/addons
file:///mnt/md/boot
file:///mnt/md/root-image.sqfs

Properties :  580.7MB

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

Performed dd if=/dev/zero on my CF card and cfdisk afterward to establish 1200mb sda1.

Installed with dd the ctk download.

Failed to boot.  Hangs at end of POST.

At least it doesn't refer to isolinux.

One last gasp...load the CF from USB mode.

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

USB mode of install also fails in same manner.

What am I doing wrong?

Mebbe the download is not hybrid for x86_64.

Both 0.5 and 0.6 operate well in x86_64 in block device mode with the downloads provided.

I will try loading the 0.5 version in the CF card. The CF card for 0.6 is 16GB and runs fine.  I have 207MB of addons in it.

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

The 0.5 gave the same isolinux.bin fail.

I removed syslinux from my system thinking it might be corrupt.

Updated the mirrorlist.

Downloaded syslinux again.

Notes accompany the install of syslinux.

"if you want to use syslinux as your bootloader...edit/boot/syslinux/syslinux cfg.....then run #/usr/sbin/syslinux-install_update -i -a -m to install it."

I assume I have to do something...what I do not know!

Examination of /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg shows only arch data for grub area.

Do I have to reprogram syslinux for this 64bit system?

The ID for syslinux pkg in my cache file is x86_64.

What do I have to do?

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

Please excuse my gross error in trying to accomplish the undesired block device entry of ctkarchlive-0.7-x64.iso.

My successful install followed the correct dd procedure which I knew was required but had forgotten it in all the confusion.  I am getting forgetful even more every day it seems.

I do apologize to all listening in.

The system booted to desktop in fourteen seconds with all 13 of the addons included in the install.

Wicd  responded when selected and arora sprang to life.

I will report performance of this block mode in the days to come.

Many thanks for your tolerance.  The custom install is fine as well and thanks for that submission.  It is much more straightforward.

Merci buku

Ray

Unplug it, plug it again, wait 10 seconds and pastebin the output of the dmesg command (last ~30 lines), so I can tell you what the problem could be.

Have no access in root to copy the dmesg, assuming it must be run in root.

Have installed curlpaste  and xclip to facilitate entering into pastebin.ca.

Perhaps I need to try arch rather than root?

If I wish to copy material displayed in root terminal, how is this done in ctk?

Perhaps there is a temporary store file for downloaded flash videos from which a user can utilize smplayer to play the file at fullscreen.

In ctk through arora internet access, where would that file of the downloaded video be located?

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

Performed a new install of 0.7 without addons in the partition#1 folder.  Established partition2 ext2.

Booted to Desktop.

Ran /install/mkhome.

Changed permissions for CTKhome and CTKhome/addons in /media.

Installed four addons from HDD into /media/CTKhome/addons.

Verified that the addons were installed in CTKhome/addons.

Rebooted.

During reboot selected "english option" and USB Keybd.

During the boot sequence following some of the items displayed but Desktop was not reached.  The computer displayed "y" in a repeating manner on the left edge of the screen.

Examination of the partitions in my HDD boot shows no abnormalities, /addons in partition one is empty, CTKhome is the label for the second partition and it contains /addons which include the addons previously installed.

This partition also has arch folder, and CTKhome.conf Txt file.

Within the arch folder are Desktop, wallpapers, introDesktop, and tryad-listen(extract.ogg).

The initial install of partition#1 responded correctly.

After installing addons, the boot sequence fails.

What might be the cause of this discrepant condition?

I've read it carefully even before starting the project.
And since I state in all of my introduction / documentation pages that “this is not a distribution” (and everytime someone says “distribution” I correct him), and always say that it's based on Arch (it's just a livecd with a few installed packages and some config, but no ugly hacks nor forked packages), this is in the category of “derived works”, and thus should need no special autorization according to the Trademark Policy.
I think this was made sufficiently clear on the main site, following the Policy's advice. Of course, I'm not responsible for a blog post by someone else, calling this live a “distro”.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But for this, you may start by reading this policy! tongue

Don't bother with that. Use youtube-play or youtube-dl to play or download youtube videos.
Example: youtube-play http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmh9__mI51g

About the wrecked system when including add-ons, I think that there is something in an add-on that runs at startup and never ends. (the “yes” command somewhere in an addon rc script? if it says “y” continuously)
You can post the results of this command on a pastebin (for instance http://pastebin.com) if you want to allow me to answer exactly:
for a in /media/CTKhome/addons/*;do unsquashfs -l $a;done

Re: [LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

I reinstalled all and corectly boot into addons in the latest trial.

Wishing very much to have my flash vids displayed thru vlc thus the request for finding the downloaded files to display(and save).

My flash source is vimeo hd which has things of better interest than you tube.

Can't get smplayer to display flash...it doesn't recognize the flash files.  Vlc does it well.

Now have two modes for 0.7...the block device with addons in the primary partition and a block device with the addons on the CTKhome partition.

Question regarding the install of addon pkg if using pacman -U to load the pkg from a mounted partition......does this have to be done from a shell or can it be done in the standard manner using the name of the package.  When stating that "name of the package" does that connote the full name of the .pkg.tar.xz?  How does pacman handle any "name of the package" in /mkaddon.  If the mkaddon is run such as to upgrade the pkg, it may not be desired.  How to use a pacman -U command in mkaddon?

Used the include changes in Live in mkaddon which performed most of the changes.  Pacman changes were not recognized, however...that is.... pacman -S pacman.

Despite having ffmpeg in the system, I had to re-install it to get vlc to run correctly..  This happened at least three times in my installs.

Sytem boots in 14 secs.  Snappy responses in most activities.

May end up cp2ram and let it run 24/7...

I think I may have hit the "y" by mistake...a thing I seem to be good at!  My left hand is recovering from an infection and is weak.  Make many errors with it on the keybd.

Thanks for 0.7 nikos!

Ray
