[SOLVED] Gnome 3: NetworkManager + modem-manager & Option 3G

I cannot get my 3G card to work with NetworkManager. I have installed Gnome3, networkmanager, networkmanager-applet and modem-manager. Dbus is started and networkmanager seems to work as I can connect to a WLAN network just fine.

That's what happens when I insert my 3G card (Option Globetrotter Max 7.2)

It looks like the card is detected, usb_modeswitch kicks in and networkmanager with modem-manager takes over. For some reason however, the device is deactivated. Turing on mobile broadband in networkmanager-applet does nothing. Clicking 'Options' under mobile broadband in Network Settings doesn't do anything either.

What is the meaning of those status changes and reasons? Should I file a bug against upstream? Which part of it?

EDIT
I have accidentally found the solution, but it is most unintuitive. I had to open network settings, select an established WLAN connection, click Options (that brings up WLAN options) then click the same Options button on the unfocused network settings window _again_ which launched a different configuration wizard which allowed me to set up the 3g connection. Hope this helps someone...

EDIT2
This is actually a workaround for https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=647170
