So I've been having this problem for about a week now. I have a Thinkpad W510 with an Nvidia GPU Quadro FX 800M. I'm using the propietary Nvidia driver. I believe that the problem started soon after a system upgrade. I tried downgrading the nvidia driver and xorg-server packages, but this did not fix the problem.
After resuming from sleep, whenever I switch between virtual desktops or scroll through a full screen PDF, the screen refresh becomes laggy and X jumps to 100% CPU. I have found that killing X, unloading the nvidia module, and restarting X fixes the problem. However, every third or fourth time I do this, I receive this error when starting X:
