no access to /dev/ttyUSB

Hi,

I need to access my headless server via serial as some (new) software screwed it up. I connect via a USB-serial cord. However, on my laptop I don't get a /dev/ttyUSBx. In fact plugging in the USB cable (connected to the server on the other end) isn't even recognized in dmesg/lsusb.

I have accessed the server using the exact cable on another laptop... I have also tried to load and unload usbserial, with no notable effect though. . .

While I am not sure whether it is related, laptop-mode have been kind of sucky lately, not recognizing e.g. plug-status.

I'd appreciate any hints.

Thanks,
Rasmus

Edit: I have set-up my server really nice so it recovered by itself after a couple of on-off cycles (not a very satisfying explanation, I know). However, I am still not able to detect usb-serial.
