[xf86-video-ati] Changing resolution in X result in unusable X server

Hi all. I've been using the ati driver for a long time without problems, but with all the latest updates (kernel and xorg, not to name), it seems I cannot change the resolution anymore.
I'am using awesome as WM, and the xrandr -s X command gives me a screen full of artefacts. I still see the cursor but the only option left at this point is to kill X.
Wierd fact, I've installed KDE 2 days ago, and with the kde thing to resize the screen wich I forgot the name I cannot seem to find on the internet, it worked. <
With KDE still installed, I tryed to resize the screen in awesome with xrandr and it worked too.
I realized I didn't need kde so I uninstalled it. Guess what, troubles are back.

I just can't change resolution without getting my screen all blurry.
I tried to get an error info from xrandr with xrandr -s X > error.log, but nothing was reported.

Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanx in advance!
