Mic doesn't work in Skype but works just fine in Audacity
I am having a problem getting my mic to work under skype, I have the device set to capture and I can do a test recording in Audacity setting it to use the Front mic on my sound card but no matter what sound device I set skype to use it doesn't want to work.

I also have problems with skype for Linux and audio. In my case is because I have a non-standard alsa setup; I redirect everything through jack. Though in my case without jack everything works, I read somewhere that skype for Linux does not implement alsa properly, so the behaivour can be unpredictable. So, when I need to make a phone call the choice is one of these:
a) use gmail calls
b) open skype in windows (through virtualbox)

I have a standard ALSA setup on my system, and I'm not going to try and talk my company into purchasing a windows license so I can run windows in a VM just to use skype

Nope its a Linux shop so no need/want for windows...
Anyways back on topic other than trying to convince everyone to use some other solution or using a virtual machine... anyone have any ideas on my problem?

Anyways it seems that part of the problem is that Skype doesn't see any kind of capture devices, under the Microphone dropdown it only lists output devices (unless I have missed something and microphones now support surroundsound...).
I know in the wiki page for Skype they have this but that is about adding an output device it looks like would it also work for input devices as well or is there something else that I will need to do?

Are you using plain Alsa or do you have pulse installed?

I'm using ALSA but I also have the ALSA-OSS package installed if that would make a difference. I have tried everything I can think of in Kmix (I have the mic volume to about 75% unmuted, the mic boost is all the way up, but Skype still fails to grab the mic. Capture is active on this mic and all the way up, my first Input Source is set for Front Mic. The mic is connected into the from mic jack, but I have tried using the back one and changing the settings for that and still no go...

I assume that you are reffering to this:
modprobe snd-pcm-oss
modprobe snd-mixer-ossNo I don't have those modules loaded, I didn't think that Skype 2.2 required OSS support for the mic.

Unless you really need something from alsa's oss emulation I think you don't need alsa-oss. I have also blacklisted all the modules related to alsa's oss emulation that were automatically loaded because from what I read it usually causes more problems than what it solves.
I have pulseaudio installed and skype has been working just fine here, however it should work just fine only with alsa. I am using xfce so I can't help with anything kde related.
