[(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

Hi. I'm currently trying out vimperator, after having fallen in love with uzbl (yes I know, I know. But I still like to use FF every now and then).
Anyway, the only problem I have with the thing is the bookmark handling. I know how to create new bookmarks, I know how to display my bookmarks, and I know how to open them with the :open <tab> completion thing. But I find it highly complicated. I mean, I have my regular bookmarks as keybinds anyway and use other bookmarks for sites I only rarely visit. Thus I often don't actually know the name of the site I'm looking for until I read it.
So now I have to type in :bmarks to see what I've got, then type in :open filter <tab> -- and that doesn't work overly brilliant for me anyway.

Does anyone know of, maybe another add-on, or maybe a trick, that would allow me to browse through my bookmarks without mouse and then simply hit <Enter> to open it? Just spent half an hour searching the web for something adequate, but nothing came up. Maybe I'm using the wrong search terms.

Just plain simple bookmarks sidebar that is accesible by using ctrl+b. It is the easiest I found and I think that is why uzbl is not going to see me soon ^^

You can open your bookmark organizer (Crtl-Shift-O) in another window / tag / etc.

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

Thanks for your replies guys, but both your solutions require me to use the mouse to pick out the bookmark I want.

I looking for something I can open with a key command, browse through with "hjkl" or "arrow keys" and then <enter> to open it in the current tab.

Edit:

Just realised that this one actually does allow me to flip through it with the arrow keys. It just doesn't work when you've got your stuff categorised in folders and want to get one level up from within one of these folders. Thanks though

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

You can search through your bookmarks in many different ways - there's a 'search bookmarks' form at the top when you open your firefox bookmarks. You can put all your bookmarks in a text file and grep away. I don't know what DE / WM do you use so you should pick sth that fits nicely into your work pattern.

Edit: It might not be the best idea I've ever had, but you can go wild and use one file per bookmark - you can have folders and stuff.

.bookmarks
  `- porn
        `- goat
              `- Andy
              `- Benny
        `- sheep

You can use '~' in vimperator to open a filebrowser, then '/' to search and enter to (somehow) open the url in your browser.

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

I wanted to open exactly the same topic! big_smile
Vimperator's way to handle bookmarks is too bad, especially when compared to uzbl's.

Currently I use this approach:

:bmarks
;o
type number to follow hint.

But this is suboptimal as it requires to type a lot of charachters...
Any good solution?

Why not? Try 'tab' and 'shift-tab' - it should move you between the treeview (so you can move to another folder) and the contents pane.

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

Thanks very much for your input, karol.

Yes, tab / shift-tab works. So I take this as a stopgap solution.

Fiddling around with extra files ... nah. (Although I must admit that I love your folder hierarchy lol ).

I may as well put a simple html list together and use it as "home". Come to think of it, I do remember seeing an addon that produced such a homepage with realtime updates for new bookmarks.

But that ain't what I'm lookin' for.

I mean, I can help myself and get around the problem by using the bookmark browser as described by you, use a custom homepage, or whatever. But, what I'm actually looking for is a solution that more or less seamlessly integrates with vimperator. For me the ideal solution would be, if I could just call up the bookmark list with :bmarks, and then browse through that list up and down and hit enter to open the link I want.
But maybe that's just wishful thinking wink

Or if I remember correctly firefox store bookmarks in plain html somewhere. You could then open this file by using a shorcut to this file.

You would have to somehow select which bookmark do you want - it's one big honkin' file w/ all your bookmarks.
You can export as html by hand or using some script (cron every 5 mins?), set the file as homepage (remove or rotate the old file) and use hints to open the selected urls. The folders are seen as headers in the html file so you don't lose track of where you are.

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

(Sorry for the delayed response.  I don't actually use Arch and just happened to bump into this thread.)

I installed the Bookmarks Tab extension.  It makes chrome://bookmarks/content/bookmarks.html into a web page full of your bookmarks.  I then set that as my home page and type gh to go home.  Then I select a link the same way I would on any other page.

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

I don't bother with any specific bookmark functionality. I just use the awesomebar functionality for them. Blazing fast access to history, bookmarks and search plugins.

" Show completions and use AwesomeBar (+search plugins)
set complete=sl
set wildoptions=auto

Edit: of course all my bookmarks are also tagged which makes it that much faster to find an identify in the bar.

You need to install an RTFM interface.

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

Personally I use quickmarks rather than bookmarks with vimperator. They take much less typing to use, and have even more functionality, IMHO at least.

:help qmark

that should get you started.

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

Thanks guys. I very much appreciate all your replies, but I wasn't (and still aren't) looking for a workaround.

That one actually goes in the right direction, but it's still not what I'm looking for. Thanks though.

anrxc wrote:

Nice one, but then you actually need to know what you want to look at. Personally, I'm using bookmarks for pages I hardly ever use and thus quite often do not even know what their name/address is etc. Ie: I need to be able to browse through my bookmarks.
All my often-visited bookmarks are mapped to shortcuts in my .vimperatorrc anyway and thus speedily accessible.

frabjous wrote:

Again, that's basically how I use my "often-visited" bookmarks that are "hardcoded" into my .vimperatorrc. It doesn't work for my collection of stuff.

So in the end, what I was looking for was basically a bookmark feature that is integrated in vimperator in such a way that I can open a list of my bmarks with a key press/key combo, browse through it with j k, and then hit Enter on the one I want. Done.

Anyway, thanks again. smile

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

While you are in the :bmarks menu, you can use the extended hints to do hint following on your bookmarks by pressing ; then o.  You can then just type in the number for the link you want to follow like normal hints.

I think this is what you're looking for!  I actually figured it out on accident just now, haha.  tongue

I don't get it. When I press ; and o in the :bmarks window it just closes without doing anything.

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

Hmm.. same thing just happened to me when I did it with firefox only taking up half the screen.  Try it with firefox fullscreened?

EDIT: It puts the hints on the page titles on the right side of the screen, so if they're not showing I guess it just exits.  A less ideal solution than I had hoped sad

Doesn't work in fullscreen either. Thanks for the tip though.

Ah, that's odd.  Just so you know I'm not messing with you, here's what it does for me.

Ah, thanks for that. That clarified it.

splittercode wrote:

That's exactly it. I had one url with a really long string that pushed everything out to the right. I removed that url and it now even works in normal window mode.
Still not optimal, but better than nothing.

Thanks mate.

PS: Didn't think for a moment you were messing with me big_smile

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

modifying anrxc advice I came up with:

set complete=bh

then you can browse your bookmarks and history with :o and tab

it can slow down ff. it works quite well though.

Hey, this is great! Thanks a lot! big_smile

EDIT: adapted to:

set complete=sb

to complete search engines and bookmarks.

This solution is not working at all for me.
when I go to the bookmarks I type ; once and nothing, when I type ; for the second time it just simple exits the bookmarks and I cannot enter into the hint mode, I cannot do ;o when viewing the bookmarks.
Anyone has any idea why that is happening?

Thanks to all.

Re: [(very nearly) SOLVED] Vimperator - open bookmarks ... easily

Not sure about the relevant though a quick think and decided to just post this:

http://www.frech.ch/online-bookmarks/fo … php?id=338

it changed my world after years of wondering how I was gonna get off
of scrapbook extension and browser (mainly firefox) dependency.

this post covers the forked version which is getting jquery love and
i deleted some of the css and html to remove/change stuff (plus changed to verdana font)

really coming along nicely and would be good if the dev who picked it up and forked it (with the orginal coders approval in fact)
saw people using it more i figure.

plus you can have browser buttons effortlessly.
I spent an evening and it's wonderful for what I need.
essentially I only use scrapbook extension for stuff I REALLY need.
online receipts and stuff. I rarely went back to other stuff in my 6 gig scrapbook folder. hehehe
So, no more mass scrapbooking which requires two moves to get back to source page in new tab anyways.
now I use bookmarks and can use them anywhere. And I'll not likely ever find a page I need disappearing offline
anyways so I got over that concern which caused most of the scrapbook extension (firefox) vibe.
