[SOLVED] Nouveau Missing

Hello all,
I've just installed Arch on a new computer with an nVidia GeForce MX 440-SE
I've installed the package xf86-video-nouvea, and I've created the appropriate xorg.conf.
My question is, where is the nouveau module? It is not present when listing with lsmod, and modprobe fails to acknowledge its existence.
Also, the nouveau wiki page mentions mandatory use of KMS to load the module, but the "Late Start" section is nearly blank, so how do I configure it?
Please help quickly, I need to get this computer up and running soon.
UPDATE: System upgrade, and deactivating the TV card solved this problem. Thanks Gusar! big_smile

Re: [SOLVED] Nouveau Missing

nouveau is not a kernel module, so it will not show in lsmod. And kms is enabled by default, so unless you have disabled it you don't have to do anything.

It is definitely a module. Have you tried modprobe nouveau? It should change to another framebuffer mode. Make sure, you dont have any VGA= option on you kernel parameters line in grub.
Also check your xorg settings.

Err, of course it is. This here: http://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/ … unk/config clearly shows CONFIG_DRM_NOUVEAU=m. But you're right with the second part, KMS is enabled by default (in fact, there's no non-KMS nouveau).

@williewillus: Which kernel version are you using? That you're using a very old one, before nouveau was included in it, is the only explanation I have how you could be missing it.

Re: [SOLVED] Nouveau Missing

Restart your computer.

Late start is the default one, so you don't need to enable it, simply make sure you don't have any 'vga=' options in the kernel line etc.

Re: [SOLVED] Nouveau Missing

What a noob I am, I forgot to upgrade the system after the install -_-....
Now the driver loads successfully and X starts, but my console is confined to an area around the upper left corner of the screen (800 by 600 I believe?), and the X session works, but is stretched to fit on the display...any ideas to fix that? Do I edit xorg.conf, or use a boot menu switch?
Thanks for the help! smile

Could be the phantom tv problem. Look in /sys/class/drm for output names. You'll find something like TV-0 or SVIDEO-0 in there. Once you have the tv output name, deactivate it by adding something like this to the kernel line in the grub config:

video=SVIDEO-0:d

Re: [SOLVED] Nouveau Missing

I have "card0, card0-DVI-D-1, card0-TV-1, card0-VGA-1, controlD64, ttm, version" inside said directory. I tried deactivating card0-TV-1, but the problem remains....is it because my card is too old? (nVidia GeForce MX440-SE)

Re: [SOLVED] Nouveau Missing

Drop the card0- part. So it should be

video=TV-1:d

If that won't work, deactivate everything you're not using, you can put multiple video= in the config.
