[SOLVED] ATI/AMD Radeon support

Hello all,

I know at one point Arch removed support for ATI Radeon cards, which prompted me to get an nVidia card(first nvidia card ever) a couple years ago.  Since then the system has run ok, some issues.

My question is, I'm getting ready to do another system upgrade and would like to go back to the Radeon line of cards.  How is ATI/AMD Radeon support these days with the proprietary drivers?

I will be running some *bling* (desktop effects), as well as playing RIFT/WoW no and then.

If you are currently running an ATI/AMD Radeon card, what are your experiences/thoughts?

Re: [SOLVED] ATI/AMD Radeon support

Imo arch did not remove support, just switched to the OSS drivers. I'm using them with a HD 4890 for over a year now, and have seen many improvements.
all default kde 4.6 desltop effects work (haven't tried others) , and i do play some OpenGL games on my systems (although no shooters).

For experiences of people using the proprietary drivers :   https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57084

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: [SOLVED] ATI/AMD Radeon support

For basic OpenGL it's OK. But in comparison with your Nvidia card driver, you will be bery unsatisfied.

Re: [SOLVED] ATI/AMD Radeon support

Thanx for all your answers.  I used to run ATI and Ubuntu without a problem, when I switched to arch I read alot about ATI issues's so I bought nVidia, and have had some random issues with this build, not sure where it's related so I'm planning on scrapping the parts (selling them) and buying all new components, and considering going back to ATI.

I will mark this solved and check out the thread that Lone_Wolf posted.
