wicd won't auto-connect to eth0

I don't have my other laptop at hand to test, but I am almost certain that wicd usually automatically attempts to connect to the wired interface as soon as the daemon is started, as long as "always switch to a wired connection when available" is enabled.  Currently, this is not working.  I have to manually reconnect every time I boot up, and also when resuming from suspend.

Per the wiki I tried wicd-bzr but the one in the AUR is so old and broken it's comical. (PKGBUILD references files that aren't there; python3 compatibility, etc)

How can I fix this?

Do you use DHCP or you have set a static address?
