I found that arch indeed is the distribution which gives me less work than others. Given the fact you know your way around a linux system.

You could reinstall almost all major distributions over the course of the year - or each 6 months. In my book thats a lot more work... Archlinux on the opposite - well you all know arch...

Re: Arch-like alternative

I'm with the people recommending Crunchbang; Debian Squeeze + Openbox is a great combination and it's rock solid in my experience. Also, the cb-welcome script that's run on first install sets up the basic stuff right away.

If security is your concern, try Qubes OS http://qubes-os.org/.

Re: Arch-like alternative

Crunchbang is a great distribution.  I think it looks very nice, and very simple configuration compared to Arch.  Based off Debian rather than Ubuntu so it's rolling release which is great.  If I hadn't given Arch a shot, I'd still be using Crunchbang.

Re: Arch-like alternative

I'll also +1 crunchbang.  I have an old laptop that i test and play around with, and now its my crunchbang box.  The developer as well as the forums are a fantastic community of people.  If i wasn't an arch user, that would be my distro easily.

Re: Arch-like alternative

+1 on CTK Arch ...

Crunchbang is NOT rolling release, it's based on Debian Stable.
But you can easily upgrade to use Testing or even Unstable,

so +1 for #!, too !

Re: Arch-like alternative

+1 for Frugalware, nice distro. For something ootb and arch-like, there is also Chakra which is intended to be precisely that.  I know It has had its share of growing pains so it would be wise to check out known issues first.

Re: Arch-like alternative

Debian Testing. It's rolling release, and very good, and apt is good, but by default you can install it with Gnome, KDE, Xfce, or LXDE configured by default if you want (or you can build it from scratch if you want)

For "Arch-like" in terms of rolling release, have a look at LInux Mint Debian (there is also an XFCE edition).

I was using this before switching back to arch last night. Excellent distro, highly recommend. I just preferred archs more cutting edge packages (yeah you can use debian unstable repos but those aren't as stable as arch)
