with the official catalyst nothing to do, and now, wanting to re-try it, I'm not going to waist my time to install the xorg 1.9 only for that package
my problems are with the xf86, beacause if I install them, I obtain
glxinfo | grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes
but not even a game wants to start...
before the last update I played normally with wow (low fps, but at least I was able to play it!) but now although foobillard or openarena doesn't go...
what went wrong? how can I play 3d games?

Your post is very difficult to understand. Are you saying you used catalyst , but then switched over to the open source because of the xorg1.9 requirement?
You will not be able to play most games with the open source driver because they lack heavily in performance compared to catalyst. If you would like to play any game newer than lets say 10 years smoothly, you're out of luck with the open source.

out of curiosity: is the performance of that open driver that bad? Are there any test to look at? I've found on at: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a … n_2d&num=1, but it only deals with 2d performance and it's 2 years old.
I'm asking 'couse I've not done too much gaming lately and my friend asked me for recommendation. Using hd4850 with the open driver.

I wouldn't say, they are bad, but the performance of the open source driver for newer Radeon HD cards (HD 2000 and up) isn't as good as the performance of the Catalyst driver (besides no OpenGL 3.x support). You can play some games like Aquaria or SuperTuxKart. The performance difference between the old fglrx-driver and open source driver for older Radeon cards (X1900 and below) is not so big and sometime the open source driver might be better (if you use the Gallium3D driver part).
For a HD4850, I would recommend the Catalyst driver. (I'm using it for my HD 4650, too). The focus of the open source driver developement for radeon cards is still for the R300 - R500 cards (up to X1900).

The performance of a hd 4670 with the git drivers from the inofficial radeon repository is good enaugh to play Penumbra and Amnesia (though there are still problems with light effects). It won't be long until it is on par. But the lack of many OpenGL extensions is the bigger problem.
If you can live with all the little problems of fglrx I can recommend catalyst-test from the inofficial catalyst repository (or AUR). This is the prerelease version of the driver that Ubuntu got and it is compatible with xorg 1.10.
I have heard video acceleration was broken with catalyst-test but I just tested it and it works with my hd 6550m (= 5650m).
It's not more unstable than any other catalyst version I have used so far...

sorry, my fault...
howewer first i used the open driver...intrigued i tried the catalyst, but i obtained only a black screen..so I came back to the xf86, which I was able to play 3d games (with opengl) and emulated ones (like wow - although with low fps)
now i don't want to install the catalyst because they use xorg 1.9, and it's boring for me to downgrade it only for them...
My problems are with the last update of the xf86, beacause i obtain the direct rendering (via terminal) but I can't run any games, because the starts and freeze...
i have been crlearer? thanks for your patience...

if you use catalyst-test and not catalyst-utils from the repo, it will work with xorg 1.10, HOWEVER we're experiencing a range of issues with the latest release (from rainbow bars to tearing to black screens), so it might not work with your card. Just make sure to aticonfig --initial when it's installed.
EDIT: forgot to mention, AMD will most likely release a working fglrx prerelease/backport to ship with Ubuntu 11.04, they usually do since that's the only linux project they really care about...

I thought catalyst-test IS this Ubuntu 11.04. pre-release-driver.

mhm....catalyst-test works but when I launch a graphic application my proccessor load switch up to 100% (both cores)...and youtube fullscreen mode locks everything :S
I have also installed lib32-catalyst-utils-test but emulated games don't work...but am I the only one which the last update of xf86 freeze 3d application?

Have you compiled a new fglrx module after installing catalyst-test? (sudo catalyst_build_module)
If yes, what's the output of
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo | grep render

Seems to be correct.
My last guess would be old config files in /etc/ati that somehow cause problems.
Shutdown X (this config gets written by exiting X so it mustn't run), and then
sudo cp /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default cp /etc/ati/amdpcsdb
or as I do after catalyst updates: Exit X and delete the whole /etc/ati to be sure no legacy configuration is left, then reinstall the catalyst-test package.

nothing...nothing to do
i'll try to search old version of the driver and libgl (for security) to resolve my problems waiting for a better release of the package

I switched from Ubuntu to Arch a year ago. I got ATI HD3650. Everything was normal until I switched from catalyst driver to catatyst-test one. Assault cube game worked flawlessly on catalyst but slowed down on catalyst-test. I always used vaapi-player for video files with its GPU acceleration support. But it has crashed on some mkv x264 file. And I suppose catalyst-test is to blame. So I start thinking of going back to Ubuntu if I don't find solution. So sad.

Catalyst 11.4 released. But still my vaapi mplayer doesn't work.

...Have you tried vaapi on catalyst-test or 11.4? If not then I think you should - it's not working for me (hd4850) ...

The same result on my hd3650.
