Włóczymyśl wrote:It leaves one hand free of use and makes your usage much slower... yeah, very wise but only if you use your PC for multimedia and single-tasking only so it's not a case for you to learn how to use your work equipment faster, easier and more confident. And when I already did it once - I see your way of usage just as you see clicking "search" in Google instead of just pressing Enter or scrolling your browser's window with scroll bars instead of the mouse wheel.
The second hand is under my head usually, because when I read some 'constructive' criticizm about KDE my head starts immediately falling down. Seriously, forcing someone to use keyboard is a big minus from the usability stand point. It's natural the keyboard lets you do things faster, but working with mouse only should be comfortable.
And you call me a moron...
Not you, but the gnome shell makers.
KDE runs very good on my computer which is quite old. It looks much better than Gnome 2 and 3 in my opinion. However, I can understand you have a different feeling. You're ignoring the fact Windows does usability research and KDE does it too. The same about Unity, but I'm nearly sure nobody did such research when comes to Gnome Shell. Damn, to pass some usability guidelines you have to provide the basic stuff which was cut off from the Shell. Everyone who goes from Windows to KDE doesn't have to learn everything from the scratch. When someone moves from M$ system, KDE or even from Gnome 2 to Gnome3 (gnome shell) it's a real PITA.
It's rather insulting to the GNOME 3 devs when you say they did no usability testing, which contradicts what a simple Google search could tell you. They didn't change for the sake of it, but they changed because they sincerely felt that GNOME 3, for them and all of their test subjects, was, as a whole, more usable. If you could point out exactly what problems it has that make it so bad, I'd love to hear them. It's completely keyboard and mouse navigable, it's minimal and doesn't get in your way, it only provides functionality when you ask for it instead of breathing down your neck about it... I love it. Simply because you don't enjoy it does not mean that they "did no usability testing". And of course it wouldn't qualify for "some" usability guidelines; none of those are set in stone though, and they certainly don't contradict GNOME's definition of usable. It's like saying that a new style of food packaging doesn't go by standard food packaging guidelines because it isn't exactly how the old food packaging was, regardless whether or not the new design of the packaging is any easier to open and dispose of.
What did they leave out? You can switch programs, launch programs, change settings, it's usable on desktops as well as netbooks and touch devices... Simply because it isn't infinitely customizable or because it doesn't do things the exact same way as everyone else does not make it bad. Different ideas need to be tried or there will be no innovation in the world of software. Yes, it's a good thing that Windows users have less of a learning curve when switching to a familiar desktop, but what would you rather have: a desktop that was instantly familiar, or a more efficient desktop with a slight learning curve? I'm not saying that GNOME 3 is proven to be more efficient, but it seems that way to me and it's developers. If the world of free software is going to eclipse proprietary software someday, it needs to innovate instead of simply being the norm. GNOME 3 is not final and is expected to improve in later releases. Please, don't insult the developers of any project, and I mean that to everybody here. I intended this thread to be for respectable discussion and I want to keep it as such.
2) So, is there going to be a meta package? I'm not even using Rythmbox... and Gnome 3 was told to be compatible with gtk2... am I wrong?
I tried running the old version of Rhythmbox, but it failed to run because of libwebkit or something. The newest git build runs well though.

open a new thread and ask for help, provide logs but don't populate this thread with this by blaming gnome for your problems

3) Fair enough. Nautilus is not working very well (it crashes while I'm using thumbnails) so I needed to use Thunar instead.
i like you a lot mostly because you didn't report this on time, this bug might and for sure exists in 3.0.1.
This is exactly the reasons i didn't move it to extra. To help upstream finding bugs and be fixed for 3.0.1 and be ready and more stable for others.
Really guys, we want to be first but for what? To ignore bugs and not let upstream know about them?

I got it to work. And now for my first impressions. Its totaly craptastic! Its all crapware and I hate it with all of my heart. I hope GNOME 3 will just drop dead. I cant find the words to describe how much I hate this crap. Its not user friendly or functional, those who came up with this must been trippin on some really heavy dope.
Im sorry, but thats how I feel about this peace of shit.

why should it drop dead? no need to ruin it for those who enjoy using it. if you don't like it there are other options out there for you.

I've been using this for a bit both on my desktop and laptop and I'm very much enjoying it so far. Only issue I've had so far is resuming from suspend with the proprietary NVIDIA driver, but afaik that's already a reported bug. It's done a really good job of getting me to use workspaces effectively (something I had never done a whole lot before, but on the laptop it's a must), and I like the Windows 7-esque features pulled in (the snap features for windows and the Logo+typing to start applications).
Really wish I could make a CTRL+ENTER on the applications menu launch a new instance of the currently selected app in the search, though. That'd be handy.

I have spend a few days with gnome 3 and I am still very happy with how they set it all up it works well for me. Hopefully nvidia and flash issues will get sorted out within a not to long time frame. Gnome has never been much of a customize desktop in my eyes but I do hope that a few more options will show up in the future and I would think so. I am really happy with search on super key too which replaces gnome-do for me.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=647743 - this bug makes me a sad panda though why why? Weird stuff like disappearing icons in main menu and gdm crash is all I have noticed. Other then that switching between applications with alt+tab on different desktops or tabbing between desktops with the keyboard kinda hurt my eyes but that might be the price for fancy.
I still do not get the suspend only by default option in the user menu and I read somewhere that you are suppose to log out then shutdown and that the shutdown with alt is more of a easter egg...woot? Anyway this is a non issue and you can do extensions etc. it only makes me smile.

Im sorry if you see it as ranting, but this is how I feel. The poeple behind GNOME are total retards for doing GNOME 3. They just did a "Vista" and fucked us all.

Im not trolling, Im expressing my opinion about GNOME 3. Dont I have the right to call it crap if I think its a big joke? Or am I forced to love it? Ive been using GNOME since 2006 and I have always loved how it looks and feel, and now they just redid the whole thing, they turned the whole DE to a big bloated joke, and I dont have the right to be angry at them? Thet forced me to seek for a new WM/DE with less functions, Im forced to use something I dont like or want and I dont have the right to be angry?

You have the right to be angry - you are asked to exercize some judgement about how you express yourself on these boards. We have a Forum Etiquette that requires that, among other things, you respect the volunteers that write free and open source software:

This is me, being as nice as I can be right now. If I would express what I truly feel, I would probably get banned for life. My "impressions" stops here, I will forever ignore the new GNOME 3 joke, as it just brings out the worst in people, I should start searching for some kind of fork or something, hopefully it will make the panic go away.

From today on, I moved to GNOME3 and have removed my XFCE in which I have put so much effort to costumize it. I just love the whole simplicity of new gnome and the fact that is very fast and _productive_. Animations are fast, simple and not overblown like fancy compiz.

I tried out gnome 3 shortly after the release, and I was quite pleased with it. What I missed quite a bit, though, was (a) tilling window management and (b) the possibility to limit the app list. I guess (b) could be solved quite easily, but I don't know much about .desktop files. Whether one can easily get Gnome to act as a tilling window manager I don't know. I don't even know whether it goes against the philosophy.
Anyhow, the Gnome people did a good job! Congratulations!

PS: On the TuxRadar post cast one of the guys mentioned an interesting issue. What will Redhat do given the major changes from Gnome 2 to 3? That is an interesting question.

It was hard to report as the whole system shoot down, so no bugzilla window present... so I created a topic about this, on this forum, asking what to do - no response so I just installed Thunar and forgot...

Given they probably have another 2 or 3 year to figure this out, I doubt it will be an issue.

You are probably right. The `optimal degree of conservatism' (as we talk about in economics) is still an interesting questing regarding software development, though.
PS: I tried the unity shell on an Ubuntu usb. It also worked surprisingly nice. I honestly don't know which one I'd advice for e.g. my mom... Both projects are quite teh awesome.

I feel this is the only thing missing.
I've been using gnome 3 for 2-3 weeks now, I have to say im really enjoying it.
I think they have made it equally useable for casual browsing etc with the mouse alone, and also for dedicated work when usng the keyboard alone.
After 2 weeks there is nothing that im thinking....i wish i could do this differently, or i wish i could do this more easily. It just works imo. (Although there a still bugs, but these are not related to useability).
(Yesterday i also installed KDE to a different partition, and in my opinion, there is no competition, gnome 3 is so much easier and more comfortable to use.)
But then again i dont care about customisation, im more impressed that i dont have to customise it to how i like it.

Well, I've promised to install Linux on her Thinkpad 'cause WinXP have become sluggish (like a year ago). Last time I saw her I created an Ubuntu usb-disk for her to try out. I just haven't gotten around to actually do it...

My 16yo gf likes Gnome 3 very much and she's using Unity on our netbook (still, she prefers G3) so it may be the good choice for someone with low tech knowledge... like, I suppouse, your mum.
My ADHD friend is using KDE since ever... but I don't know anything about needs of people with ADHD but I'm ADD guy so I always prefered Gnome also cuz it didn't absorb my precious attention. (-_-')
Btw. Nautilus is working well by now so I believe it's time for me to remove KDE for good. \^_^/
