I had following installed:
thunar
thunar-archive-plugin
thunar-media-tags-plugin
thunar-thumbnailers
thunar-volman
thunar-audio-thumbnailer
But after some recent update thunar wasn't making thumbnails anymore. As per thunar page here linked from the Arch wiki, I did not have
/usr/libexec/thunar-vfs-update-thumbnailers-cache-1But after installing thunar-vfs I did and ran it:
/usr/lib/thunar-vfs-1/thunar-vfs-update-thumbnailers-cache-1However after logging out and back in and even rebooting, no new thumbnails. I even removed the ~/.thumbnails folder but still no go. So in IRC someone said I needed the tumbler package, which I installed and the thumbnails all started to work. But now, scrolling through directories of videos/images in thunar is quite lagged and you can see it struggling to redraw sections of the app as you scroll. Never had any problems with thunar before, would appreciate any help, thanks a lot!!

I have exactly the same problem since a system upgrade from like 2 weeks ago. Help would be appreciated.

You'll need tumbler for thumbnail support. It's listed as a optional dependency for thunar.

Thanks a lot, tumbler works.
My question is, why did thunar generate thumbnails perfectly before, but now needs tumbler to do so?

No idea but it's probably an upstream change. There are quite a few things that changed with the latest xfce update.

Yeah. The latest XFCE upgrade seemed to impact the performance of Thunar on my machine, too. I found it particularly slow to load the first time I opened it among other things.
So I took another look around at lightweight file managers and decided to try PcManFM again after a disappointing experience with it on Puppy a couple of years ago. So far, I'm quite pleased. It looks very much like Thunar. Starts up fast. And, most importantly, it has tabs.
I'm sticking with PCManFM for the time being.

I don't use xfce; my system runs stand alone openbox.
Thunar is just my fm of choice.
I can now remember that this started after a thunar update, I'm almost certain.

Not sure if you were responding to nae64 or myself, but if myself, I already had tumbler installed as per OP ![]()
So is thunar just fudged, no solution? Just bad upgrade on XFCE's part?
edit: Thanks for the pcmanfm recommendation I will try that. Sucks though, thunar was my go-to for years ![]()

Well I had the exact same problem (no thumbnails after thunar upgrade), and installing tumbler fixed it. Weird that is doesn't work for you.

Maybe the thunar config file got corrupted during the update ? Or the thumbnail cache. Deleting config files solved some problems with other apps for me.

@ Grinch: Again, tumbler worked-- creating thumbnails not the problem, but strangely lagged scrolling in the app itself...
@ Varg: Which config file? I see ~/.local/share/Thunar but no config file(s) in there. Love to give this a try.

Thunar config files are in ~/.config/Thunar. Thumbnails are either in ~/.thumbnails or ~/.cache

Thanks! Moved out the ~/.config/Thunar and ~/.cache/Thunar folders, and wiped ~/.thumbnails, but thunar still lagged in scrolling
Ah well, not a big deal.
