ok, I wasn't going to post here, but that security question about date -u + uname | sha | ged etc....
that HAS GOT TO BE THE BEST SECURITY QUESTION I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Sooo... now that I'm here...
I've been using linux since '97. Started with Suse 6.3, moved to Mandrake 7.0 a week later, fiddled around with lots of different distros but continued to use Mandrake until 9.2 (and knoppix). actually, I think I rolled back to 9.1 because I didn't like 9.2. About that time, I ran across Wesnoth, which did not have a binary for Mandrake so I had to learn to compile a program. That was easy, so I packaged it up for Mandrake for others. (my one claim to fame). Anyway, that experience gave me the confidence to try Gentoo and I fell in love. I loved the control and the freedom to install anything I wanted because it was all ready there in portage. Unfortunately, my motherboard went on the fritz which left me running a knoppix cd for 6 months.
By the time, I purchased a new pc, I was into college finals, moving, new job, young family etc. Not much time to build a new system from scratch so I tried Ubuntu. 30 minutes later we were watching movies and Ubuntu was here to stay. (that and my new job as a Microsoft database developer has left me living on a company laptop with XP.) Despite my laptop, my wife and kids have continued to use Ubuntu to this day.
Now, six years later, I'm sick of how 'big' ubuntu is on my home computer. I'm also tired of the fact that every time I go to 'do' something on it, it doesn't work. Seems like ubuntu doesn't use the typical config files or has some gui app that manages the typical config file. The gui is nice, but if you want to do something nonstandard, you can't do it. My biggest complaint at the moment is I cannot figure out to get GDM to allow me to log into X remotely. Oh, and cups is broken, though I could probably fix that if I tried.... *sheepish grin*
Anyway, I've been fiddling with Arch in a vm and I must say I like how simple it is. I'm not sure about the 'bleeding edge' part yet because I rarely use the desktop, but I really like the control you get over your own system. I feel like it's my Linux again instead of Ubuntu's. Now I just need to finish installing every game that is on the desktop and anything else that my wife might want, so that I can sell it to the rest of the family.
<oh I've written a book... I hope you enjoy the read.>
I guess to be complete I need to add the fun i had at work:
- setup a debian based SVN server at work for a year until I converted it to windows so I could sell SVN to the company. (success, now there's a corporate svn server.)
- setup an OpenSuse based iFolder server for demo purposes for another department. If they like it, great. If not, oh well, I still got paid to mess with linux. :-)
soo... anybody know the difference between supertux and supertux2(which pacman can't find)? Just kidding, I can look it up.

I used Ubuntu from 8.04 to 10.04 and Linux Mint after that. I've been on Arch for the last 9 months, and this is my best move.
It took a few days to get it going the first time, but I tried the last time to have Arch 64 dual booted (I had arch 32 bit), It was done in an afternoon.

I've been using Linux for a long time and have used arch off and on, but I have not been very active in the forum scene. So here I am.

Hi everybody, I'm doctor Nick! xD
Joke aside, I'd like to say hello to everyone on this wonderful forum. I've been using Arch for a while now, and I must say that IMHO it's currently the best distro out there atm. I've used openSUSE, Ubuntu, Debian, etc, but Arch beats them all... Specially considering the new direction Ubuntu is taking with 11.04 and Unity (I can't stand it!). Anyhow, I've already spent a lot of (unregistered) time on the forum, and I think it's awesome... There's always an answer for every question. And now I've decided to contribute a bit more and get involved, helping others with my knowledge.See you around!

Hello all on my first visit to the forum. I'm about to change from LMDE, mainly to get Gnome 3, and a friend who's used Arch for many years convinced me of the distro's many benefits. Rolling release, bleeding edge and the strong community appeal. I used to run Gentoo but don't have enough years left to go back to compiling from source. No doubt I'll have many questions and I look forward to keeping up with the forum. Regards, Dennis.

Hello all, I've been using arch for about a year. I hope I can give something back in the forum.

Hello everybody,
I'm Vinay from Bangalore, India.. I have been using Arch Linux for over 3-4 years now.. Arch has almost stopped my distro hopping.. Well, I still do try out other distros temporarily in another partition, but Arch has been the consistent choice that I always fall back upon.. It is my primary OS/distro for everything. It is quick, lean, up to date and works with minimal (or mostly no) system management..
I am contemplating buying a new laptop.. If I do, Arch will be my primary distro on it..
I have been a silent user for over 4 years.. From now on, I intend to help out people in the forums and give something back to the community..
Regards,
Vinay V

hi
i wanted a very old laptop i got to be my websurfer. i tried puppy on it some time ago, but this time i thought i might as well learn something in the process. checked thru a few distros and decided to go with arch. why? because of the awesome wiki and "the arch way". the aim is to have a websurfer laptop with the bare minimals. somethin in between my smartphone and the main rig.
i'm also planning on setting up a server box again. it used ubuntu, but for the sake of learning more i'm going to put arch in there too.
in the main rig i use mint and vista (i'm a gamer, so i can't actually get rid of ***dows).

Just saying Hello !
Whoo Hoo I did it . Survived my first Arch install !! I come from Ubuntu/Mint so I have my past installs have been point and click.
I have to say the documentation here is GREAT ! Even little old ladies can chirp along. I gave myself a double whammy
learning Arch and KDE at the same time. I am only using the stock repos right now plus the one for yaourt.
Playing it save at the moment till I get my feet wet.
So my install is pretty generic at this point. The only thing left for me right now is 3d catalyst and after scanning the documentation and forums I am a little leary.
However I do like google earth and it sucks under the open source driver. I guess I will continue to watch the forums and see how 11.4 rolls out.
I can live without 3d for now as I need to familiarize myself more with KDE and Arch plus have a I back log of sorting to do.
I made a video of my install it is nothing special just proof that I did it LOL..
Here it is if you are interested...

Hi,
Been using Arch for a few months now, and still liking it. Moved to Arch after years of using yggdrasil, Red Hat, Fedora, OpenSuse and Fedora again, I got bored at installing a new distro version every time I just needed a newer version of some package.
So finally made the move to Arch and have not regretted it for a moment. Hope it stays that way. Think it will.

Greetings all,
Just thought I'd introduce myself & say hello to y'all. I've been using Arch for a month or so and have been really enjoying it. Prior to this I was using Ubuntu, but I grew a bit tired of it and felt like experimenting with something new. I'm so glad that I did, as I feel like I'm getting a much better feeling for how Linux works than I ever would have done if I'd stuck with Ubuntu. Part of the attraction for me is the rewarding feeling that you get when you figure out how to fix a particular problem for yourself, and the feeling of being more in control of what's going on. However, I've still got a lot to learn...

Hello!
I'm Ian. I live in Canada. I've been using GNU/Linux exclusively since August 2010: openSUSE 11.3 until late March, when my motherboard died; Debian 6 for the last month on an old PC I never got around to dismantling. I also had an ancient Dell laptop sitting around, and I'd heard good things about Arch, so I installed that. I liked it enough that when I got my primary computer repaired (i.e., almost completely rebuilt), yesterday I installed Arch. Coming from the "fully functional out of the box" distribution world and having left the Windows world less than a year ago, Arch was a little daunting but I'm impressed at how straightforward the vast majority of the set-up process has been. I really like the approach, the wiki is extraordinarily helpful, and pacman and the AUR make me happy.

Hi all. I'm Sidney from Bonner Springs, KS, USA. I moved to Arch from LinuxMint Debian and really like it. I had LMDE essentially turned into a Debian unstable with Mint flavor and got tired of it breaking every few days. Yes, I know it's called unstable for a reason, but I started out using some newer packages here, namely the Gnome3 packages, but yet even though there were far many more of the Gnome 3 packages available for Arch the one thing that was missing was the instability. I now have Arch both on my nVidia based desktop along with Win 7 and on my ATI Radeon X1200 based laptop along with Vista and I'm quite happy with both. I really enjoy the wiki and the build system and how things are kept simple enough that you can actually fix things if they get messed up and at the same time you wind up learning a bit more than with the other distros that complicate things by trying to hide too much of it from you. I've used Red Hat, Fedora, Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS and tried several others here and there, but my experience with most is that as soon as you get it installed and if you're lucky enough for it to actually boot then as soon as you do the first major update you have a broken system. It shouldn't be that way. Necessary updates to the current install image should be better tested than they sometimes are. I have done several updates so far with Arch and everything just seems to keep on working.
