for some reason, wifi gets disabled by radio killswitch.
then i tried:
rmmod acer_wmi
and suddenly, the wireless interface was up and everything was fine.
is there any solution to this other than removing acer_wmi? presumably, the module is useful and it's worth keeping.
thanks.

updating to the new kernel (2.6.39) fixed the issue.
