Blender simply won't start, reports 'Illegal instruction'.

Installed Blender 2.57 from testing, and tried to start it from a terminal after several failed launches. It only reports one line, 'Illegal instruction'. I'm using a compatible video card and driver, and I have no idea how one would go about diagnosing the problem. Haven't found anything else like this on the net, so I'm guessing it may be an issue with blender or the way it's been packaged for testing. I'm using the i686 repositories for my 32-bit CPU.

Works fine here (starting up, not doing anything yet) on x86_64.

This is an ancient idea, but maybe it will help:

Re: Blender simply won't start, reports 'Illegal instruction'.

I in fact have no Blender related configuration files in my home directories. On top of that, I just reinstalled Arch (due to complicated hard disk issues) with testing enabled before I ever installed Blender, and even then I have the same issue. So it's nothing unique to the previous installation. If any other 32-bit testing users could see if they have a similiar issue, that'd be great- it's a relatively small download. big_smile

Still searching for solutions with the Blender community itself. Nothing much- they've basically said it must be an issue with the distribution (ah, classic technical support). Thank you very much for your attention, especially if you manage to try this out yourself. I've always had very good experiences whenever I run into trouble on Arch, due to the community.

Have you tried building blender-svn from AUR yourself? Maybe that will help?

Same issue here, i686.

Should be fixed in blender-1:2.57b-2.  The older 2.57 packages where built with sse2 which isn't supported by all i686 processors.

Indeed- I can confirm it works. So far as I'm concerned, this is solved.
