Radeon & Kernel 2.6 Problem

Hey all,
To start, i've been running arch for a few months now, and loving it. Haven't posted much on the forums though, but starting today i'd like to change that.
I have, since initially installing, been playing around with trying to get my radeon 9200SE videocard working at 100%, but right now glxgears only comes out at about 200fps.
Here's the issue:
I can get the fglrx driver to compile & install (using the wiki on creating the packages in 2.6).
I am running a customized 2.6.9 kernel as some other hardware i have requires 2.6.9 or lower at the moment (waiting on better drivers).

So, I can get the fglrx to modprobe, and can start xorg 6.8.2-2 just fine. I have also been over the Xorg.0.log file, and found no errors anywhere, by all accounts it should be working properly.
BUT
as soon as i run fglrxinfo, i find out the MESA drivers are what's running.  I have tried new kernal compiles, including cutting out kernel DRM support completely, but that didn't change anything.

As of right now, the kernel has agp and drm compiled as modules.
I have also resorted to wiping the entire system and starting fresh, which is where I am now.  Basically, i have xorg, enlightenment WM, and firefox on the system right now.  I was hoping the wipe would correct whatever problem is causing this to happen, but it didn't.

I have also read that it may be my Xorg 6.8.2, but the fglrx drivers i used during the install (latest) claim to be FOR 6.8.x, so i figured that shouldn't be a problem anymore.  Plus, i can't find a package for the earlier Xorg 6.7.x, so i haven't tried it.

I hope this all makes sense, cause i'm completely stumped on this one...
The following post will contain all log files and info i can track down on how the system currently sits.
If there is anyone that has seen or heard of this, or anyone who could take a minute and look over my logs/config files and see if there's something simple i'm missing, i would REALLY appreciate it.

TIA,
-s_m

Re: Radeon & Kernel 2.6 Problem

are you using flgrxgears or glrxgears to test your fps?

Re: Radeon & Kernel 2.6 Problem

Card: ATI Radeon 9200SE
Kernel: 2.6.9 from kernel.org, with some scsi driver patches.  Current kernel has both DRM and AGP compiled as module.
Xorg: 6.8.2-2 (latest)

Re: Radeon & Kernel 2.6 Problem

Hey dust, that was quick!
I am right now using glxgears.
I just tried running fgl_glxgears and got the following:

X Error of failed request:  BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length error)
Major opcode of failed request:  16 (X_InternAtom)
Serial number of failed request:  36
Current serial number in output stream:  38

At this point however, with the fglrxinfo returning the MESA info, instead of the custom ATI info, i'd like to get that resolved, and i'm hoping the rest will fall into place...

Thanks for the interest,
-s_m.

Re: Radeon & Kernel 2.6 Problem

It looks like my 2nd post was cut off....
what was to follow was the fglrxinfo that i am getting right now:

[root@MORBO ~]# fglrxinfo
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.2.1)

Re: Radeon & Kernel 2.6 Problem

ew, that means that your shatty fps score in glxgears is because its software renderring. if flgrxgears can't run and flgrx_info returns that data, you're definately on software.

You can see it in your xorg log there, you're getting a bunch of failures concerning drm:

(II) Loading extension ATIFGLRXDRI

drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
...
(**) fglrx(0): using built in AGPGART module: no

Trying changing this to yes in your xorg.conf, but first need to work on your ati-driver so that you are on dri and not the mesa software.

How did you set your xorg.conf? did you use the application provided by ati to create it?

also, what instructions did you follow in the wiki? there are 2 different ways to prep your kernel for the drivers.

Re: Radeon & Kernel 2.6 Problem

ew is right... sad
Yeah, i see those drm errors now, i just assumed all of them leading up to the last one were just testing different dri cards.  Cause everything relating to /dri/card0 seems to return ok, but none of the others.

I used the fglrxconfig utility to create the xorg file, as many of the other problem posts in the forums suggested. I haven't gone in-depth into the settings it placed in there yet, so i'm not sure if there's much that can be altered to help my situation.

I have tried the agpgart module as both yes and no, with the same result.

The wiki i followed was the Radeon & kernel 2.6.x one, located:
http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/At … rnel%202.6

I had to alter the PKGBUILD for the ati-drivers-module-kernel26, to prevent the two patches from applying to the build, as my kernel is old enough (2.6.9 vs the 2.6.11 that they are building for) that they were unnecessary.

I hope that provides a little more insight.
I appreciate all the help man, thanks again.

I'm off to bed now though, so i'll check back in the morning.

Later.

Re: Radeon & Kernel 2.6 Problem

Did you receive any errors while building the modules? Did they build and install ok?

I myself am very slowly finishing up the install I made of arch last week (I'm really slow lately doing anything lol), and receiving a few bugs in building the packages. Do me a favor and reboot for a clean boot, startx, and before running anything, open a console and past for me the output of lsmod. Then install (likely you already have it, but if you don't nab it ! big_smile ) lshwd and run it by itself (no flags) and paste the output.

Did you add the modules for your drivers in your rc.conf btw?

If you want to try a quick fix though, try:
1: boot to console
2: run lshwd -a , then see what flgrx_info says.
3: If it still says the same deal about mesa, manually load the module:

# modprobe agpgart
# modprobe fglrx

4: run flgrx_info again

If you get any errors trying the above quick fix, paste them here. A not so quick fix would be to build yourself a 2.6.11 kernel image and compile in the drivers directly instead of loading as modules. If it works that way then try making another kernel image (same version of the 2.6.9 branch you're using) and compiling in the drivers directly like you did for the 2.6.11 one.

Its really wonky that you would be receiving these errors if the modules compiled cleanly and installed without a hitch. I have a hunch that the modules just aren't loaded in when you tried running your fps numbers.

Re: Radeon & Kernel 2.6 Problem

You can try using the new Ati driver installer...

The new ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Installer makes installing the ATI Linux driver a much simpler and user friendly experience. The installer provides for automatic and custom driver installations. Further, the ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Installer provides an option to generate distribution specific driver packages.

Re: Radeon & Kernel 2.6 Problem

Well, the newly released ATI Drivers worked without a problem yesterday.
I removed the ati-drivers-module-kernel26 and ati-drivers packages I had created, then ran the ati installer.  After a few minutes and a reboot, i had GLXGears running at 1100fps.  Much better.

Thank you for all your help dust and qwerty!
