I just did a complete reinstall, and am wondering why I've had to add some entries to my $PATH variable (i.e. /opt/xfce4/bin, and /opt/firefox/bin) in the /etc/profile file, when I don't ever remember having to touch that last time I did an installation. Should I just add /opt and let it look there recursively?

those entries are usually added by scripts in /etc/profile.d, which are sourced from /etc/profile, I think... is that being sourced properly in your ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bashrc?

Hmmm...that is weird. I never noticed that section of /etc/profile before, but yes, it is set up to run the scripts under /etc/profile.d/*.sh and all of the correct files exist and the permissions are set correctly. Any idea why that would be failing to import those?

I'm retarded...I hadn't logged out since installing those things, I was just su'ing back and forth so they never got the chance to load. Looks like everything is working fine now.

Oops, that was supposed to be the first thing I suggested too. hehehe.

Isn't there a command to have the profile reread without having to logout/in?

yeah, '. /etc/profile' or 'source /etc/profile'
However, it tends to be better to log out to make sure everything happens in the right order. Otherwise you end up with duplicate entries on your path and stuff.
