Is there any way to make VideoLAN Client play formats that are normally unsupported? This looks like a really awesome media player, but it doesn't use win32 codecs, so what it can play is a bit... limited. Is there any config file where I can put the location of new codecs for it to use, or is VLC stuck with what it comes with by default?

besides. all features you name are not actually IN ffmpeg. they can be linked against ffmpeg and are therefore just as likely to be present as that these libs are present for VLC.
In that case, how would I link the codecs against ffmpeg? If I did, would VLC recognize it?

I have found VLC to support more proprietary formats than MPlayer - in my dealings with them anyway.

It doesn't support the most common proprietary formats.
