Hi!

I was using few linux distros such as Mandrake (old times, not so long), Mandriva, Slack (both very short), Debian, Ubuntu, Mint (most) and I've finally swiched to sth which work and is fast in use. ;-) I'm happy to be a part of Arch Linux Users Community. ;-)

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

I started Linux experiences with Gentoo Linux.
For many years I used it. There were only few things I didn't liked. Switch to Arch Linux was the answer.
Now I have Arch on my Aspire 1810TZ, on my server and on my girlfriend's laptop too. The best and only choice for me. If only I could install Arch on my N900 with all the things working (apt has already messed things up on it).

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi Everyone,

I'm happy to say I'm in my 2nd week of running Arch and LOVE it.  I've been using Ubuntu for several years, but was becoming frustrated at the slowness with which updated packages make it into the official repos.  I heard some good stuff about Arch and was intrigued by the rolling release model.

I have to confess that I first tried to install Arch about 2 months ago, which resulted in me trashing the Ubuntu system I'm dual-booting with :-(   Lessons learned, I tried again a few weeks ago and it all went swimmingly.  Still getting set up, but so far am very impressed.

It's clear there's a great community around this Distro, and I've been amazed at how current all the documentation I've read seems to be.  Keep up the great work!

Hope that I'll be making some friends here.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone,

I first tried Arch Linux four years ago when I had just started with Ubuntu. At that time it was way above my level. Four years and countless hours of Linux, Unix, bash tutorials/man pages later I gave it a new try and found home. Arch is pure brilliance.

Hello everyone!!!

I am new to arch and simply love it. Simple light and not full of things I have no use for. Coming from Windows to linux period has been a challenge but without that there would be no difference in my opinion. I look forward to all the new possibilities here and the very knowlegable community here. Thanks to all who made this possible.

I've been using Linux since 2003 and finding Arch Linux is really lightweight.. but I am not sure which part that being called as simple.

Still can't figure out how to make the audio works..

New to Arch, wanted something more advanced to learn Linux.  I started on Ubuntu in 2008 and moved to Debian.  Great community, I hope I can contribute as well some day!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Greetings everyone!

I installed Arch in February and I am extremely delighted since then smile I've spent my last few years with Gentoo but eventually I felt that compiling my own stuff was way too time consuming and I got tired of it.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi all,

I came to Arch because I wanted to try out Gnome 3 right after it had been released. And Arch Linux was one of the first distributions that offered a Gnome 3 package (in the testing repository) shortly after the release date.

Now I use Arch since about one month, and I like the simplicity of the structures and the flexibility of the distribution. Furthermore I enjoy being on the bleeding edge :-), even though knowing the disadvantages, fighting with some bugs and problems :-).

In comparison to Gentoo, it's much faster to setup a system from scratch, but on the other hand, it is also possible to compile packages myself if I want to.

It's great. Thanks to all the guys, making this distribution possible.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Howdy,

I hail from Canada. I started using Linux about two years ago. Like a lot of newbies, I got going with Ubuntu. About a year ago I switched to Arch, and haven't looked back. I love the simplicity and customizability - the Arch Way! Arch appeals to my drive to tinker.

After a year of using Arch, this is the first time I've posted to the forums. I think this is a testament to the great Arch Wiki and the vast amount of helpful information available on the forums. The Arch community is one (of many) reason this distro is so awesome. I plan on becoming more active in the forums, giving back and passing on what I've gleaned so far.

Arch has taken me from rank Linux n00b to a happy Linux enthusiast. Thanks for all the lessons, knowledge and experience Arch! Here's to future years spent happily hacking away on the path to Linux grandmaster ...

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi guys, I'm new here. I'll probably be asking a bunch of questions since I'm brand new to arch. I've been using linux since 2002 and I love (nearly) every minute of it. I got tired and annoyed by how much ubuntu and it's derivatives bog things down and hide config file contents. So I went hopping again and landed on Arch and I have to say that I really like it so far. The wiki is great, except that flash in any form wont download from pacman. No clue why. It appears as though it's not there but it shows up in the package listings on the website. I'll work on that when I wake up.

I'm from Ohio, USA. Mostly used ubuntu and the like but have tried over 50 distros that are listed on distrowatch.com over the years. Yeah, that's a lot of CD-R's. hahaha I like small footprint distros and nice wm's. I'm currently using xfce but it's slow and I don't know why. Laggy. So I'm going to install enlightenment here soon and give that a go again. Great to be here, thanks for having me! smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Aw, jeez, I wanted to have my own intro thread but I see here that there's a big one that condenses everything. Well, more in line with the Arch ethos of KISS, I guess.

I've been using linux for about 3 years now. I started with Mint but I found that within a very short time I was customizing it way too much, basically removing all of the built-in Minty stuff. Then I moved to Ubuntu, same thing, customizing customizing, always arriving at sort of a proto-gnomeshell type of environment. Finally Gnome3/gnome-shell came out and I just had to try it. First I tried an OpenSuse liveCD but I had trouble with my hardware and I wasn't in the mood to fiddle with it. Then I upgraded to Natty (what a pain), tried out Unity for ~38 seconds, added the Gnome 3 ppa (a bit of a pain) and switched to Gnome 3. I love Gnome 3 but I found that using it in Natty was kind of like eating on your mom's best porcelain while riding on the back of an inebriated elephant. Once I started to run into (apparent) configuration conflicts between Natty's Gnome 2 base and Gnome 3, I decided I had had enough.

It had been a long time since I had some "real" Linux (I played around with various distros ~10 years ago), so at first I was going to go the Slackware route. Then I decided I like package/dependency management, so here I am.

The install went smoothly. This was certainly not due to my own skills and, rather than chalk it up to luck, I'd like to say that the wikis here are absolutely incredible. I still have some hiccups in my setup but I'm confident I'll be able to sort most, if not all, of them out without ever having to ask a question here. I only hope that I can begin to contribute to others here.

So, uh. Cheers!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello I am Frank,

I want to thank for this inspired KISS distro very pleased with it, I am new but know I installed ARCH I should not be too new smile

I am from Venezuela, living in Quebec, Canada, using GNU/Linux from november 2010, I tested several distros,  and most of then works very well, but:

I choose Arch because it goes with my way to do things, so is the closest one to my liking, this is what I found better:

1. Can install right away base only (true base) and then add packages I need or want. smile

1a. The installer is run from withing your running machine, so you have all terminals available at installation!

2. Up to date versions 201005 image is good but I liked weekly snapshots better! smile

3. Very small footprint initial download core and netinstall images are not too big. smile

4. Very nice and functional WIKI pages, A+ smile

5. Beginners guide UP to date!, and very well written, installed ARCH to my liking following the wikis and threads! smile

6. There are 3 forums where I can look for info... smile Spanish, English and French speaking guy here! smile

7. No need to be reinstalled because something is wrong, I feel I can repair any mistakes easily, others are easy to install but when problems arise --- reinstalling could be the only solution smile.

8. Mirror management, super! smile.

9. My Acer 4520 laptop accepted ARCH! smile

10. Forum very responsive and active, some times while using other distros, answers to fix came from ARCH fellows, jeje -- they don't give you the fish but teach you how to capture it! - smile

Regards.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey.  I've been tinkering on and off with Arch for a little bit.  I'm pleased with its essential structure (simple unified config files, etc).  My main distro is still Ubuntu (been using it since '09), but I like the rolling release format of Arch quite a bit.  But I'm lazy and greedy and want the best of both worlds!

Hi everybody smile I'm ****, been using Arch for nearly a year now (after a truly horrific experiance with gentoo), and I still haven't been able to find a single reason to move away. Every computer I own has Arch on it, and I just converted my best friend from Ubuntu to Arch

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone, I am Nekhelesh from Netherlands....I have been using Ubuntu for the past 3-4 years and was always annoyed of its slow updating of packages and the need to upgrade every 6 months. But I did like it for its simplicity and ease of use.. Then few days back my friend told me about Arch linux and its rolling release system and how you install ONLY what you need. And I immediately starting doing some research and found it to be very nice. I installed Arch 2 days back and everything is going well..
