Hello all!
I'm writing this using my new snappy Arch Linux machine. I'm quite excited.
Anyhow, I've installed Gnome 3 and I like it quite a bit but I'm seeing quite a bit of tearing when moving windows around and sometimes things seem to clip off. The machine is a running Intel Sandy Bridge onboard graphics. I was just curious if this is something to expect from Gnome 3 or Intel drivers or maybe something is faulty? When running GLX gears the overall effect is very pronounced and I was able to take screenshots.

I'm using Gnome 3 with nvidia driver (binary, closed-source driver).. I don't see this issue. Moving windows around seems to be smooth for me..
Maybe it is an issue with intel driver?

Could you post the output of sudo grep intel /var/log/Xorg.0.log ??
Also, perhaps the output of glxinfo (glxinfo is provided by the mesa-demos package)

btw: this does also happen with oder WMs, but in Gnome3 it's extreme.

in my opinion that all looks pretty good. i've read somewhere else, that it might be a problem with the .38 kernel. i will try to downgrad to .37 and see if the problem still exists.
edit: ...wait...shouldn't it load the i915 instead of the i810 driver? i have a i5 2500k with intel hd graphics 3000

Well, it does not appear that the problem is with the video hardware. Those logs look pretty good. IIRC, the 810 in in the log is just generic for intel. Check the kernel logs and you'll find it is using the 915.
I'm sorry I cannot offer any more suggestions, I don't use Gnome. I was just trying to ensure the video subsystem was sane.

I have just downgraded to 2.6.37 ...everythings fine now! no tearing, glxgears runs fine, everythings smooth.
So the problem is with the the .38 Kernel!
I dont know wether this is a known bug or not...and i actually never filed a bug report, so what can i do?
And as i mentioned before the problem isn't related to gnome3. tested it in twm with .38 and glxgears flickered, too.

It doesn't appear to be an issue across all intel/2.6.38.x. Using an older E2180 Allendale here w/G33 Express and kernel26 2.6.38.5-1 and everything is super smooth.

I'm still experiencing some issues with some java 3d stuff... but i guess that's due to the unfinished sandy bridge drivers. Besides that everythings fine. Running xfce4+compiz right now. (gnome3 is garbage the way it is at the moment)

You can't get rid of tearing completely when using X and compositing window manager. You have two choices: tolerate this, or switch to non-compositing WM. That's all.
Wait for Wayland adoption to use compositing without tearing (or maybe something changes in X).

Actually this topic wasn't really about tearing but flickering graphics, even with TWM. So I don't think this is about xorg nor wayland.

I guess I don't know what tearing is. It was crappy with 2.6.38, and it's non-existent with 2.6.37. I will test with 2.6.39 when it is available.

Hi everybody.
I am using Gnome Shell and I have a Thinkpad T420s which is equipped with an integrated Sandy Bridge video card. I've had tearing under 2.6.38 and the performance have been improved by installing 2.6.39 from testing.
However, I still have tearing when watching movies and I still have visual artifacts (they are highly visible by hovering and unhovering the workspace selector in the overview). Furthermore, both with 2.6.39 and 3.0-rc1 from kernel.org mainline, the shell sometimes doesn't perform well. In particular, the hot corner doesn't always react, when I select windows in the overview I have an horrible lag before leaving the overview, dragging applications from the dash to the workspace lags as well and I experience a delay between clicking a button on the panel and seeing it pop-up menu. This kills using Gnome Shell, and I thought Intel cards were the out of the box purchase for Linux.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?
I'm running mesa, intel-dri and libgl from testing (i.e. the mesa 7.11 candidate), kernel 3.0-rc1 now, xf86-video-intel is 2.15.
Any suggestions? Should I report the bad performance somewhere? I googled but I couldn't find anything useful.

alexcriss, I can confirm the same issue on the same machine. I experience tearing under Gnome 3 (in FC15 not Arch), though I have not updated to the latest kernel to see if it's at all improved. I have yet to experience the odd UI lag you mentioned.

Thanks for the reply. Lag started with new kernels, namely 2.6.39 and 3.0-rc1. Out of curiosity, may I ask you how is the shell performing? On my machine, activating the overview is smooth sometimes, while other times results in quite a bad animation, as if the frame rate was really poor. Is it also the same on Fedora?
I like the new Gnome 3 concept, but the experience with Sandy Bridge as it is now it's quite frustrating. I'd love to have a stable and smooth experience!

I can confirm the lags in Gnome3/mutter, but i experienced them with all kernels. Compiz, Kwin etc. runs smooth though.

Just upgraded to 2.6.39 and I can confirm the delayed UI response. It's especially apparent when using the Activities View. If it becomes too annoying I'll probably downgrade to 2.6.37.

From my very first impression it seems to really help, let's hope that the impression doesn't prove wrong in the long run! Thanks a lot!
Besides, I've written a mail to the Gnome Shell ML some time ago and a dev replied that Sandy Bridge drivers are a work in progress and many bugs that appear in Gnome Shell are know to Intel guys, so it's a matter of patience and time.
