[KDE 4.6.3] - Oxygen icons looks ugly after update

Hi everybody!

It's just me or folder icons changed to an horrible, uglier, Tango-ish style after last 4.6.3 upgrade?

I don't mind the change of iconset, but there is an inconsistency between small and big icons. This really annoys me.

You links are down for me. However: you should file an upstream bug report as it is very unlikely KDE devs will read this thread here.

These are the new Oxygen icons. They are not available for all sizes, since they still are a work in process.

Changes like this in a minor release are not sane.

I really thought that it would be included in 4.7, not 4.6.3, what happened :S

Quick and dirty workaround to get a consistent look with the new icons is to delete or rename the 16x16 and 22x22 folders.  Fallback looks OK to me.

I hardly see this as a weak link in the chain.  Those icons have always looked like pressed plastic to me;  I've never used them, and changing them never brought my system to a halt.

I really really don't like this folder icons...

Can we make an oxygen-old icon package or something?

Couldn't you just downgrade the package from cache?

I'm using a difference icon set so I'm unaffected

Re: [KDE 4.6.3] - Oxygen icons looks ugly after update

It's a matter of having to keep the downgraded package indefinitely. I noticed this, too- the stripe is distracting, and creates a lot of visual confusion whenever a pictures folder with diagonally tilted thumbnails on top is shown. I'm fine with incremental changes, but this folder icon doesn't look similar to any other Oxygen icons, has excessive definition, and the past folder icon was perfectly fine the way it was, even at extremely small sizes, for old people. I don't understand the reasons for the 'improvement'.

It looks less organic, more distracting and rigid, and well... I guess even after all that, I just don't like it in the first place. I'm sorry to be so critical, but this change doesn't make much sense to me to begin with, without the obvious issues of changing something as oft-seen as this. I just... my brain hurts. At least make all the other folders match this visual malarkey.

Re: [KDE 4.6.3] - Oxygen icons looks ugly after update

I just want to throw my hat in the ring here and say that after the update to the newest Oxygen icons, I was thrilled to see the sleeker and more defined folder icons.  The old icons were absolutely hideous.  I'll admit that the stripe is a little odd and perhaps difficult to get accustomed to, but these icons are leaps and bounds ahead of those shiny, bubbly horrors that I've been trying to get used to for years.  I do look forward to other icons becoming more consistent with this more professional look.

Re: [KDE 4.6.3] - Oxygen icons looks ugly after update

So they're basically just abandoning Oxygen? I mean, that's my main issue is the lack of consistency- if KDE wants their own icons outside of the Oxygen project that was so vital to the preliminary design, that's totally fine. We can always have a separate icon theme for those who don't like it. But there has been a long traditional of high resolution SVG icons in KDE, one of the best technologies available in KDE, the pixel-perfect graphics. I think it would be a shame to give off an overly simplified impression, even if the stripe were taken away.

So, my opinion of the icon itself aside, I think it's fair to say it's totally inconsistent with the current icons, and that many KDE program writers aren't going to just get on the Elementary-esque icon train and leave the refined logos behind. Minitube, for instance, recently came from one of those more elementary logos to a more refined and identifiable one. I guess I'm only really upset because it was perfect for me, and I saw KDE's design as an exceptional piece of work. I'd much rather people who like those new icons get their own stinking theme rather than assert that traditional KDE users are all going to love them, and start shoving them in at weird places where everyone will have to see them (unless, of course, they don't use folders ever, hah). Poor execution, I'd say. Even my Grandma thinks it looks weird, and she's no designer.

I personally like the new look, it's a little less "overpolished" in my eyes. I've never been able to use Oxygen without gagging at the glossy folder icons and whatnot.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their own oppinion, and I respect that.

Re: [KDE 4.6.3] - Oxygen icons looks ugly after update

Yeah, but if I see Dr. Pepper change only one element of their logo design and leave the rest as is, I'm going to be visually confused, even if it's "easier to look at" that individual piece on its own. If you're going to betray your brand identity, do it all the way and change it all up. That's not the kind of thing you can do incrementally in distributed packages.

I doubt anyone who's for this idea in this thread actually uses KDE on a daily basis and uses the defaults like I do. My opinion on icon styles doesn't really matter, but I think reason speaks to the fact that inconsistent design is many times worse than somewhat ugly consistent design. I mean, I'd rather be using KDE 3 and feel at peace with the visual identity than have to see this every day. Graphics aren't the most important part to using your computer, but when you're used to good icon themes and a coherent visual identity, it makes it silly to conceive of using something else, as a designer.

I don't care much, though- it's an easy fix. Just use the Oxygen Black theme or make a theme that keeps the old icons if this is the only change. It's not an impossible issue to overcome- I'm just surprised at the people making these decisions when they've been much more insightful in the past.
