I use the program "terminal" as my terminal (i guess) program (as opposed to xterm etc). I also use openbox as well as the nvidia drivers.
When I click the edge of the terminal program I get a black box in the upper left corner of my screen. If I resize the terminal window then the black box grows with it (proportionally). It is like a shadow. I can then drag anything over top of it and it goes back to normal.
eg:
I have the latest drivers.

Are you using openbox inside KDE? I'm having this problem on vanilla KDE: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=272757

nope, just openbox

Do you use a composition manager with openbox?
Those look like there are rewrite problems on the hidden layer.
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

No I do not.

I'm experiencing the same issue in XFCE, the latest nvidia drivers.
Enabling compositing fixes the issue, though isn't a solution for me since I rely on Xinerama and compositing doesn't play nice with Xinerama...
Interesting that only the terminal window instigates the problem. I'll let you know if I find a solution.

Well, I gave up troubleshooting the xfwm - xorg - nvidia setup so I uninstalled nvidia and installed nouveau.
The problem went away, though performance isn't quite the same... which is saying something since my most graphically demanding task is resizing a window.

I have the same problem with xfce and the latest nvidia drivers. The issue is posted on the nvidia linux support forums here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=162387
I also found it in xfce's bug tracker: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7517
I guess at this point we just wait and in the interim try a different terminal or possibly revert to an older nvidia driver.

I will just avoid resizing my terminal window

Latest beta drivers (275.09.04) solve this problem

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Apparently this issue isn't resolved yet as of stable nvidia 270.41.19; unfortunately I cannot use nouveau due to it's less advanced multi-monitor support.
This bug is reported upstream: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7517, for Fedora: http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showth … p?t=263471 as well as Ubuntu: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/777606.
Another problem, perhaps unrelated, seems to occur to me when using konsole with kwin desktop effects enabled, solely when using the nvidia drivers. If one resizes the konsole window strange artifacts appear ocassionaly causing X to crash.

I reported this issue awhile ago, somewhere here on the forums. If it bothers me too much, I just make xterm my default.

I found this solved as of today, with the new nvidia which was:
[2011-06-14 19:38] upgraded nvidia-utils (270.41.19-1 -> 275.09.07-1)
[2011-06-14 19:39] upgraded nvidia (270.41.19-3 -> 275.09.07-1)
