Pulseaudio and the microphone
Ever since the Gnome 3 upgrade I have had pulesaudio forced onto my system. I know how to get skype to correctly work with my microphone with alsa, but with Pulseaudio it acts like the volume is 1/100 most of the time. My voice is barely only hearable with an extremely specific setup. Anyone know of any fixes? I can't uninstall pulse without uninstalling Gnome. :-/ It was my oldschool fix.

pizzach, it was the same for me on my laptop. Somewhere in these forums I found this solution which helped me:
In terminal run a command
alsamixer -c 0(if your sound card is at index 0, otherwise try to increase that number)
There I press F4 to see Capture controls and see that my "Internal Mic" level is at 0. I increase it and then I'm able to hear myself.
One problem I didn't solve yet is that this setting seems to be lost on every reboot, so had to repeat it again each time. Not a big work though

Already been through that guys. Those instructions are all over right now. My Capture and Mic boost are at 100% is alsa for my sound card. I really wanted to call my mother for mothers day and I couldn't because of this.

Did you try to uncheck "Let skype manage volume levels" (or smth like this) and see if it helps - assuming you are using Skype...

Yeah. Skype would sometimes work. Sometimes not. Now that it is unchecked, it just doesn't work at all.

Meh it is probably something stupid, but I am canceling my Skype subscription until I figure this out.

I believe it is a bug in the 2.6.38 kernel. When using the LTS kernel, my mic works perfectly. This may be the case for you.
