PCMCIA not working on thinkpad t23

Hi,
I am using Arch with kernel 2.6.38 on a Thinkpad T23 laptop. both udev and pcmciautils are installed. my Ali card is detected:

output from lspci:

lspcmcia shows:

lsmod | grep pcmcia returns:

pcmcia                 30510  0

pcmcia_core             9762  3 pcmcia,yenta_socket,pcmcia_rsrce]

everything seems to be OK, except that when I connect my usb stick or scanner to the card, no device shows up! it just shouldn't be this much difficult and time consuming to setup and use a pcmcia card!
