Which of the ati drivers is better in terms of energy efficiency?

Hey,
I have the feeling that my hd 5850 is wasting a lot of energy. I have the xf86-video-ati driver installed, but I didnt find a tool to check gputemp and fanspeed. I'm also missing a tool to monitor power consumption in detail. Is there a detailed power monitor and a monitor for my graca you could recommend? Is it worth it to try the proprietary driver (catalyst)?

thx 4 help smile

I would recommend the catalyst (fglrx) driver.

On my old 4870x2 opensource drivers were noisy, with fanspeed on full all the time.
Catalyst are much more silent.

With my new 6970 i havent even tested xf86-video-ati, but fglrx works good. smile

Have you tried using the following options:

ClockGating
ForceLowPowerMode
DynamicPM

in your xorg.conf?
