[SOLVED]Nouveau Screen Extends Past Display Edge

A recent X server update ruined my Nvidia driver setup so I reinstalled and tried to stick with Nouveau. I installed X, Nouvea, and KDE as the wiki suggested. I boot into a terminal and I can see the whole screen. After I start X I cannot see the bottom of my screen. The edge of my screen goes past my display's edge. My mouse can go down too and click around. I navigate around and run stuff through Alt+F2. Alt+F1 allows me to see the tip top of the KDE Launch Menu.
I suppose the ideal solution would to be getting Nouveau working, I can get vesa to work but I max out at a resolution of 800x600 on a display capable of 1920x1200.

xorg.conf.d/20-nouveau.conf:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "n"
    Driver "nouveau"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "n"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "800x600_60.00"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

In the above, my screen is not coming in at 800x600, that resolution is just a test.

xrandr output:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2048 x 1536, maximum 8192 x 8192

Re: [SOLVED]Nouveau Screen Extends Past Display Edge

xrandr says you're using 2048x1536 - have you tried to change it to your desired resolution .e.g 'xrandr --fb 1920x1200'?

Re: [SOLVED]Nouveau Screen Extends Past Display Edge

Yes, the 1920x1200 stretches out to match the display X thinks I have, 20" is what I'm thinking, and the problem persists.  My monitor is 16.4".

Actually, xrandr reports '0mm x 0mm'.
Try

       --fbmm widthxheight
Sets the reported values for the physical size of the screen. Normally, xrandr resets the
reported physical size values to keep the DPI constant. This overrides that computation.

Re: [SOLVED]Nouveau Screen Extends Past Display Edge

xrandr -s 0 --fbmm 1920x1080

didn't do anything for the screen as a whole, but the titles of my chrome tabs shrank to what looks like a size 4 text.

xrandr -s 0 --fbmm 1920x1080

didn't do anything for the screen as a whole, but the titles of my chrome tabs shrank to what looks like a size 4 text.

Ummm, 1920x1200 are dimensions in pixels, you use it with the '--fb' switch. The '--fbmm' one needs millimeters. My 19" is 410mm x 256mm.

Re: [SOLVED]Nouveau Screen Extends Past Display Edge

Let me bust out my scale.....145x95 still did nothing. No change in the screen dimensions.

Re: [SOLVED]Nouveau Screen Extends Past Display Edge

I've just noticed you're using an oooold X server:

X.Org X Server 1.8.1.902 (1.8.2 RC 2)

and an ooold kernel

[ 547.560] Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.34-ARCH x86_64

Why?

Which nvidia driver have you been using? nvidia, nvidia-173xx or nvidia-96xx?

No offense, but it looks more like a 7" screen ;P If you measured 14.5""x9.5" you need to multiply it times 25,4: 368x241 seems about right.
Does 'xrandr -q' still report 0 x 0 mm size?

You can try setting the dpi instead

       --dpi dpi
This also sets the reported physical size values of the screen, it uses the specified DPI
value to compute an appropriate physical size using whatever pixel size will be set.

Re: [SOLVED]Nouveau Screen Extends Past Display Edge

The "old" X server and Kernel are supposedly "pacman -Syu" fresh.....
Nvidia 260.19.44 but that isn't quite what you're asking.
No offense taken, I used the wrong side of the scale. Even with the right size nothing happens.
Querying xrandr still shows 0mm x 0mm.
I needed a program in Win7, I'll try the dpi soon.
Thanks for your help so far.

Re: [SOLVED]Nouveau Screen Extends Past Display Edge

OK, so let's start by getting you a fresh mirrorlist: http://www.archlinux.org/mirrorlist/
Pick some servers, save the list to your drive, run 'pacman -Syy' and use this mirrrolist to get a lot of new packages. Be sure to read all the post install notes.

What's the output of 'pacman -Q pacman'?

Re: [SOLVED]Nouveau Screen Extends Past Display Edge

None of my mirrors changed from the ones I had, however, rankmirrors moved them around - and I have a boatload of stuff to redownload. But I know I downloaded several (old) versions of these packages earlier today. I even had an old pacman database version! Do some mirrors not update in a timely manner? And my current version of strigi is newer than the one in the extra repo on the server I'm using. Lovely.
I'm going to have to do this on a hi-speed connection tomorrow, 1006 MB is a little much. Thanks for catching that.

Re: [SOLVED]Nouveau Screen Extends Past Display Edge

I think pacman uses the first server from the list, so if it's age-old but still working, you get no updates.

You need to update pacman and run pacman-db-upgrade script. It was a painless transition for me so I don't think you need to worry.

Oh yeah, in a record-breaking 2hrs time!

Sorry, I should have read the logs you posted carefully, not just glance over looking for obvious errors.

Re: [SOLVED]Nouveau Screen Extends Past Display Edge

Hey, 2 hours is a lot better than a reinstall with the same problem wink
With the new mirror, it boots fine and KDE launches inside of my screen, thanks for catching that again.
Pacman does use the first server from the list, but I kind of figured all of the servers were pretty up to date.
