Transparent Gkrellm Themes Stopped Working

Good day.

I've searched for a few weeks now trying to find a solution to this issue. I seem to be the only one in the world experiencing it.

A few weeks back, after an Arch update, my normally transparent gkrellm themes (Invisible, Invisible Black, Invisible White, Glass, etc.) lost their transparency. They all look like the default gkrellm theme now.

I've removed gkrellm and its config directory and reinstalled. No change. I'm suspecting that this was caused by a gtk or python or other rendering update. I could be totally off the mark, though.

My WM/DE is Xfce 4.8.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I can at least confirm the problem. I have Xfce-4.8/Compiz, and while I don't normally use a transparent theme with gkrellm, I tried one just to check and I indeed have the same problem. The command line output doesn't provide much information beyond the inability to access a couple of the PNGs from an unrelated theme, and gdb shows nothing untoward happening. Have you tried rolling back any of the suspicious packages? I'll try in a few days if I get the chance - see if we can at least figure out who is causing trouble.

Thanks for replying. Nope. I have not attempted any rollbacks. I wish I had done this immediately after I first noticed the issue. It's been a few weeks now, and there have been numerous Arch updates since then. I wouldn't have a clue what to rollback at this point.

Thanks for the assist. I primarily use the transparent themes in gkrellm. It's useless to me if I can't utilize it as I want. I haven't been using it since this started happening.

Hi Eric,

Sorry it took me a while to get back to this - I was off on travel. I haven't found an actual solution, but I have found a work-around inspired by a post on our very own boards a bit ago:

I use the "hsetroot" program when I have to set a background manually rather than "feh", so I just ran "hsetroot -center wallpaper_name.png" (same wallpaper as for xfce) and gkrellm goes invisible.

I don't know why there are so many different background varieties flying around (I think there is one for X, one for compiz, one for E17, etc., and none are compatible), but that seems to lie at the root of our problem. You should be able to add the background setting program to your .xinitrc, then it will take care of the problem whenever you start up. If you change your wallpaper in xfce, obviously you will have to change the line in your .xinitrc. Hope this helps.
