Openbox theming problem with GTK and gnome-settings-daemon

Just started using Openbox because I'm not too fond on Gnome 3.  I'm using a gtk theme and lxappearance to apply it.  My problem is that I like gnome-control-center and at this point don't know of any other way to control the sound using the volume buttons on my laptop without having the gnome stuff installed.  But whenever I install the gnome-settings-daemon it overrides my gtk theme and sets it back to the Openbox theme, which, to be frank ,is pretty ugly.  So I guess I just need some way to override the gnome-settings-daemon so it doesn't change my theme or some way to deal with sound in Openbox without the basic gnome stuff installed.  Thanks!
