kworker constantly using 15/20% of CPU since upgrade to 2.6.36-ARCH

Hi,

Since upgrading to 2.6.36-ARCH kernel I've noticed that my CPU has a constant load on one of the cores:

kworker/0:1 shows as using 61% CPU usage on one core.

I cannot seem to find out much about what kworker is and what logs I need to look at to diagnose, can anyone point me in the right direction?

I had similiar problem with kworker few days ago but it didn't show up as increased CPU usage in top. Instead of this powertop was showing thousands wakeups for kworker, [Rescheduling interrupts] and [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick. I've also noticed that CPU and GPU temperature were higher by ~40% than usual. So I've cleaned fans and checked if RAM is well seated. Maybe it was luck but one of these things helped and since then everything is OK on 2.6.36.
The mysterious part of this problem (if it was somehow caused by bad ventilation) is that it wasn't showing up when I had downgraded to 2.6.35 kernel.

Anyway I've found some references to kworker problem. You should check them for solutions:

I'm also have problems with kworker. Also when I run Virtualbox I have more kwoker wakeups than when after system boot. Nothing helps for me by SlodS references. Anyway thank you SlodS...

My problem with kworker starts after a few minutes after my netbook resumes form a tuxonice hibernation.
I've something like 1000+ wakeups from idle and drained power goes from 6.6 to about 7.7W.
this was on 2.6.36.1 kernel. any luck with newers?

I'm having the same issue. Kernel 2.6.38, on my ThinkPad T61.

I found that for whatever reason the problem started once I ran the WICD daemon. I uninstalled WICD and went with networkmanager, but as soon as I started the networkmanager daemon, kworker nuked my CPU again. Stopping WICD daemon, stopping networkmanager daemon, killing wicd, etc - none of that worked.

For the moment I uninstalled WICD and networkmanager and configure my wireless manually (which is a pain, but it works). The weird thing is that it just happened all of a sudden.

EDIT:
Went back to kernel 2.6.37 and I'm not having any more problems.

Has there been any resolution to this? It's not 100% reproducible for me... unlike Andevellicus, I run wicd every day but don't always get this problem. It comes and goes. Once it comes, though, it seems like it doesn't go away. It seems to pretty much lock up cpu0 (I have an i7 with 8 cores). Cores #1-7 will be at their low end (933mhz) while core #0 will be at 1600. Conky shows kworker eating 12% of my cpu, which normally idles around 1-2%. See here for my post on that: LINK

Any resolution to this? I'm about to reboot and am confident that it will not be happening on reboot. But sometime in the next 1-2 weeks, it will happen again.

Fan constantly on, cpu usage high, core0 not coming down from the highest frequency.

I'll try that if it returns. For some reason, it's very sporadic for me. Perhaps only once every 5-10 reboots. I haven't figured out what triggers the issue. I'm glad someone posted some tangible solutions, though. Thanks.

Suggestion: Enable the CONFIG_INOTIFY kernel configuration option.

@akurei: do you use hibernation?
I've had similar issue on resume from it, ad it was due to an xorg upgrade on intel gpu.
for the time being i'm stuck with xorg 1.9.0.

I've had experiences only with nvidia and intel, and the 'bug' happens on intel hardware, so i can't say much about ati.

Anyway, those are the packages needed to downgrade to xorg-server-1.9.0

I've uploaded the intel driver too, but it is not needed, as i'm using xorg19+xf86-video-intel-2.14 without problems.

Ah, as a side note, i noticed that doing "alsactl -restore 0" on wakeup (from s2disk and s2ram also) saves 0.25W, at least with Realtek ALC269 and snd_hda_* modules)

I have installed both 32-bit and 64-bit Arch and kworker craziness happens only with the 64-bit version. 32-bit runs flawlessly.

This seemed to have gone away for me for a while, but it's definitely back and seems to occur after 2-3 pm-suspend/resume operations. Is there anything I can collect that might help? (modules at boot vs. lsmod after resume? same for ps ax or something else?) I'm up to date with pacman as of yesterday.

Where is the pcie_ports line?

Edit: Found it. Just adding it to the kernel line in menu.lst
Niether compat nor native work for me. And my usb ports have stopped working as well.

Edit2: I've noticed that when I plug in my usb mouse or a usb drive, kworker starts using 90+% of CPU. If I don't mess with the usb ports, my CPU processes seem normal.

After connecting any USB devices I need to execute this little script to stop the CPU load caused by kworker:

#!/bin/sh
sudo rmmod ehci_hcd
sudo modprobe ehci_hcd

Afterwards my USB devices are working.
