[SOLVED] Couldn't find a suitable graphics driver for an Intel system

Hi everyone,

I just switched from Ubuntu to Arch linux and everything except the graphics is fine. I have installed Gnome 3 as my desktop environment. I have followed all the instructions I could find and tried both the Intel and Vesa drivers but still the system is not supporting higher resolutions than 1024x768.

This is the output for lcpci :

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 12)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 12)
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset HECI Controller (rev 06)
00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset USB2 Enhanced Host Controller (rev 06)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 06)
00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev 06)
00:1c.2 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset PCI Express Root Port 3 (rev 06)
00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset USB2 Enhanced Host Controller (rev 06)
00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev a6)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 5 Series Chipset LPC Interface Controller (rev 06)
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset 4 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 06)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset SMBus Controller (rev 06)
00:1f.5 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset 2 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 06)
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 03)
02:00.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6315 Series Firewire Controller

I have found that the graphics is integrated with the Intel Core i5 processor itself and haven't found any specific drivers for such systems.

Any help is much appreciated. thank you

Re: [SOLVED] Couldn't find a suitable graphics driver for an Intel system

usually when you have problems with X you pasted Xorg.0.lot and maybe dmesg. without them you can't expect for help

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: [SOLVED] Couldn't find a suitable graphics driver for an Intel system

[ 36.697] (II) intel(0): [DRI2] DRI driver: i965
[ 36.697] (II) intel(0): Allocated new frame buffer 1024x768 stride 4096, tiled

That's 1024x768 alright. What's the output of 'xrandr'?

Re: [SOLVED] Couldn't find a suitable graphics driver for an Intel system

Looks like EDID is the culprit:

[ 36.644] (II) intel(0): EDID for output VGA1
[ 36.644] (II) intel(0): Printing probed modes for output VGA1
[ 36.644] (II) intel(0): Modeline "1024x768"x60.0 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync (48.4 kHz)
[ 36.644] (II) intel(0): Modeline "800x600"x60.3 40.00 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync (37.9 kHz)
[ 36.644] (II) intel(0): Modeline "800x600"x56.2 36.00 800 824 896 1024 600 601 603 625 +hsync +vsync (35.2 kHz)
[ 36.644] (II) intel(0): Modeline "848x480"x60.0 33.75 848 864 976 1088 480 486 494 517 +hsync +vsync (31.0 kHz)
[ 36.644] (II) intel(0): Modeline "640x480"x59.9 25.18 640 656 752 800 480 489 492 525 -hsync -vsync (31.5 kHz)

I think you can manually add a new mode using xrandr...

Re: [SOLVED] Couldn't find a suitable graphics driver for an Intel system

Might not be the problem, but you have a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf - you shouldn't have that.

Re: [SOLVED] Couldn't find a suitable graphics driver for an Intel system

Thanks. Manually adding new mode worked! There's one strange issue though, if I am watching videos on youtube or such then there is no sound in music players such as VLC and vice-versa. Should I create a new post for this issue?

If https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fl … d_playback doesn't work - yes.

Re: [SOLVED] Couldn't find a suitable graphics driver for an Intel system

Glad to hear you could add a correct mode. Regarding sound, I think there has already been many threads about this subject on the forum. Don't forget to look at the wiki too. (Have you installed ALSA?)

Re: [SOLVED] Couldn't find a suitable graphics driver for an Intel system

Thank you all for the help, everything's working great for now. The sound problem was due to flash plugins and it is solved. Thanks once again for great help smile
