X freezing

I have an annoying problem. Basically my X is freezing occasionally. The only suspect thing I found is:

(EE) intel(0): [DRI2] DRI2SwapComplete: bad drawable

It seems like there is a problem with certain Intel chips (I use Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD) and packages coming with Gnome. (I haven't installed compiz though.) Here you can find some more links and bug reports, apparently describing the same problem:

Any hints solving this very much welcome! Thank you.

Re: X freezing

You're not alone here. I started having X crashes after a full system upgrade some days ago.

My first problem was X crashing randomly as described here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=117669

I followed one of the suggestions in that thread and installed xf86-video-intel-git package from AUR, which seemed to fix the issue until today my X froze when I was closing my screensaver. I'm also getting the DRI2SwapComplete: bad drawable error in my Xorg.log.

This freezing is actually even more frustrating than crashing since the only thing I can do is restart my laptop with the power button. I hope it gets fixed soon.

Re: X freezing

Not that this will help avoid crashes but does an "emergency low-level restart" work? Basically you hold Alt+SysRq and with those keys held down, slowly type REISUB. If this works, it is slightly cleaner than pressing the power button.

Great things come in tar.xz packages.

Re: X freezing

To be more precise: It seems like this happens to me when xscreensaver starts and runs for more than a minute or so. Maybe there is some OpenGL involved..
