I didn't know of a better place to post this, so...
I've got a 16GB flashdrive. I backed up all of my files onto it, then reinstalled my OS. (Replacing a WinXP/Arch dual-boot with pure Arch ). To my dismay, when I plug the flashdrive in, I get only /dev/sdb populated (
). No partitions found. On WinXP I get "this disk is not formatted".
So, I did the best thing I know how to: I copied the contents of /dev/sdb to my harddisk with dd. It took *forever* because the drive kept resetting, but afterwards, inspecting the file, it looks like it got the whole disk.
The question is, how would I go about recovering a specific file from this image? I am only interested in two ~5KB C files which took me months to write. I would be very grateful for any help.
I've Googled around for utilities and techniques, but I haven't found anything applicable.
Thanks,
Chris

Have you tried testdisk? It's in the extra repository. I have used it in the past to rescue things off of FAT partitions, but it claims to work on ntfs and ext2/3/4.
I'd give it a shot and see if you can rescue anything.
